1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
My Uncle recently purchased a 1991 Camry to replace an '89 that was in an accident and it has no radio installed.
My aunt it looking to buy him a radio for Christmas and I just had a couple questions since I can't look at the car myself. It seems that, according to the options on Crutchfield, that all '91 Camry's had factory radios (there is no option for not having a factory radio). Can anyone confirm that this is true?
If so, did all factory radios come with 4 speakers? If not true, did the cars at least come with front speakers like the Corolla's with no radios did at the time?
Thanks!

Every Gen2 Camry I've seen had at least a basic radio, and 4 speakers. There were several different units available, and I did see one with a CD player in a 1991. I put one of these in my '90 and it sounds surprisingly good, the stocks speakers actually sound nice with a more modern stereo.

The camry actually comes with 6 speakers two which are simply for stock bass. They are located with the 3inch speakers in the front. And probably people do that just get a radio from your local pawn shop and go to wal-mart and get the cubby hole it fits right in

Those extra 'speakers' on the front speaker cabinets are passive radiators, not speakers. It is similar to having a ported box. A stock gen2 Camry only has 4 speakers.
For the original poster - as long as the harness plugs are in the dash, putting a new stereo in there should be easy. You can use any aftermarket stereo and even most Toyota stock radios through today...

As far as i know they are little subs basically when my radio is on they move just like my 2 12s do in the back so in which case they may be what u called them but in a general sense they are a form of speaker because they put out vibrations related to the music.

There is no magnet behind them - they are not speakers. Think of putting a ballon over the port on your subwoofer to change the 'resistance' to air movement through the port - that's what they do. Its actually a very advanced and technically difficult type of box tuning to get right, which is why you don't see it very often.
