2nd Generation 5 speed to 6 speed? Is it possible on the 2nd gen?

I was wondering because I'm doing a 3sgte swap in my camry in the near future, would the mr2 6 speed transmission be able to work with few modifications?Me and my friend have done alot of talking and I know some Mr2s came with the 6 speed transmission and I'm abviously going to be bulidling this 3sgte for power.I was just wondering if it would fit and work functionally considering it does connect to the block. And i believe having a 6 speed tranny would benifit when it comes to getting higher speeds.Just want some feed back on what people think and if anyone knows where I can locate one with the linkage and everything.

You and your friend are mistaken. There was never a 6-speed MR2... unless you are talking about a 2zz-ge swapped MR2-spyder or a mk1 MR2 supercharged with a hybrid transmission swap, neither of which count and won't work on the 3s-gte (bolt patterns and ability to hold the power).

Secondarily to all that, a 6-speed performance oriented transmission normally has the same 'range' of gearing that a 5-speed would have (first gear and top gear ratios similar). The 3s-gte has plenty of power over the RPM range, so you will appreciate shifting less than you would with some theoretical 6-speed - you lose around 0.5-1.0s for every shift...

Nope, won't fit. Not sure why you'd want one from a Celica- the one in my brothers 6th Gen (1994) isn't really much more than a cut down factory shifter... Sure the throw is shorter but a Camry already has a pretty damn short throw for a factory shifter. I can shift my old rig faster than he can do his much sportier Celica.

Actually I've done some research and it is possible and no I have an 87 celica tranny and shifter the throw isn't enough into third gear I can Chirp second and could do third but I practically throw my hand inches away from the cd player so I want a short shifter I already have a stage 2 upgrade

If you want to get really technical, anything is possible... I would be inclined to look at a '90-'99 (5th-6th gen) short throw first, as the platforms are significantly more similar than with the 7th gen Celica. How much play do you have in your shifter when in gear? I would imagine a Celica trans wouldn't really need much more cable movement than a Camry transmission (this comes from me manually shifting both flavors at the linkage) so it may be you have excessive play in the shifter. My '91 2wd had issues with a sloppy shifter. New bushing is $7 from a dealer... Maybe something to look into.

Most of the Celica shifters (well, '86+) fit in the gen2 Camry shifter. I use an ST205 shift lever in my Alltrac... Make sure you shim and lube everything to tighten it up while you are in there. New shifter bushings (trans side) and checking the 'sugar cube' for wear are also a good idea.

As for the Celica trans vs. the Camry trans (FWD to FWD), they are effectively the same trans with a different final drive ratio... gain some acceleration, lose some mileage.
