1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I did some searching, but didn't come across anyone who had actually done this. I'm asking because I found a car at the salvage yard that has the same colour doors and door panels as my '87, but with power windows and locks. So I could grab all 4 doors, and of course the wiring harnesses, relays etc. But is this a plug and play scenario? Or will I have to start cutting and hacking into the existing harness? What about the wire loom for the back doors, my car doesn't have any wiring going into the back doors AFAIK, so I assume there is no hole in the door pillar, is this so?
Seems like a crazy project to be honest, but this is the first time I have seen the correct colour combination with the power stuff. Assuming some jackass doesn't butcher the car in the mean time, I'm really considering grabbing these parts. Thoughts?

I've seen it happen, but from factory installs on my friends car years ago. AFAIK, you do need to do a bit of hacking into the harnesses but should be more easy going than to place pwr windows and doors on a model that has never had the option. What you really need is a wiring diagram of the car.
For the back doors, check by the hinges as there may be a plug blocking the wiring through the door and B pillars. If there is, you need to wire through the vanity plate on the B pillars. If not, well SOL.

Looks like I am going to have to take another trip to the junk yard, there are so many Gen2 Camry's in there I can easily compare between cars with manual and power windows. I put in A/C a few years ago from scratch which was a real pain in the neck, I'm hoping this is at least a little bit easier.

If you get the doors.....Take time to pull back the wiring loom and inspect for pinched, bent/broken wires particularly on the drivers side door. It’s a common weakness for the PW option.
I replaced/repaired six out of (I think?) nine wires on mine, “Now” my passengers side is beginning to act up.
Question 71’ does your car have the “power seat belts” they move when you sit down and close the door? These are also part of the door wire bundle, not sue if that makes a difference

My car does not have the automatic seatbelts, I don't think that was something they put in for the Canadian market. Later this weak I'll go back to the yard and try and figure out what needs to be done for this swap, although there is a chance the door panels and the like will be destroyed by people trying to get to door switches etc. Hate people that do that.
For the wiring, I fully expect that I will have to do a repair for the flexible sections. I've done it twice now, on my '87 and my '90 (which is out my hands now). It's a lot of work, I remove the plastic sheath and tape, and splice in wire from a non bendable section of a donor harness. Hate doing it, very tedious but it's the only way short of buying a new harness section, if even possible.

I hate those people. Why do you even work on cars if you destroy everything to get to that 1 part you need? Good luck on grabbing those parts!

fully expect the door switches to be torn out of the panels cause people think thats why their locks etc. dont work.
also, the faceplate of the switches is removable and you can change the color if need be. If you find the switches from one car and find the faceplate from anaother haha
What you really need is a wiring diagram of the car.
Consider this a Christmas gift then.
Legally obtained by myself from toyota's subscription website for manuals. I'll try and find a link to that shortly, but IIRC it's $15-$20 for a day's access to the database.

Its hard to tell from the diagrams what wires will be there or not on cars with/without options. Generally the wires are there though (on the body harness, at least).
People have been able to add power seats without any wiring, and my automatic Alltrac has the wiring for the clutch start switch, clutch cruise cancel switch, etc. for an auto->manual swap (I had to add a relay and move one other wire...).
Your best bet is to grab the door cards ASAP - the rest of the parts you can get from any power window Camry...

Going to try and make a trip to the yard down tomorrow. I don't want to buy the doors if I can't actually do this, I'll end up with 4 doors I don't need, or I'll have to return them. So I'll have to strip down a manual windowed car and compare the two, should be interesting.

According to the FSM, it's the same door. If you have the FSM open up the section entitled "Body" and flip/scroll to page BO-4

Just got back from Pick N Pull. Surprise surprise, someone messed up the drivers door panel. It was not completely destroyed, but they pulled on it and broke the backing in several places. Jerkoffs. The doors were not in that great a shape anyway, a couple of the doors has rust creeping in around the bottom. The paint was actually really good though. If I did get the doors I would have to do some rust repair for sure.
But here is what I found out. The door pillar on a manual windowed car does not have a hole for the grommet/wiring for the rear door, it would have to be drilled out. The wiring that goes to the back door is mostly separate from the main harness that goes to the back of the car, but not completely. So one would have pull/cut out the harness from the donor car, and splice in maybe 5-6 wires into the existing harness. The connector looks like it will plug into the fuse block though, at least on the left side kick panel. I didn't look at the right side, but it's probably the same deal, plus you will need whatever relays are a part of the locking circuit.
Not sure what else might be needed, but honestly to do this, it would be far easier to have a donor car instead of trying to get everything from the salvage yard. I could get a junker to strip, except very few are my colour combination, and fewer of those have power windows/locks. I've considered converting my interior to grey, mainly because the grey is extremely nice on the Gen2's, my '90 has the grey interior and after I cleaned it all up, it looked fantastic. A really nice grey, it has a nice hint of blue in it. So if I find a rust bucket with a grey interior I might grab it, although I don't look forward to stripping everything out, especially that dash sections that is a ton of work.
Bottom line, this is doable, but it is no plug and play job.
