Replacing Master and Slave Clutch Cylinders- Any Insights

(1990 and 1991 Camry-4 cylinder)

I'm preparing to tackle my first master/slave clutch cylinders replacements tomorrow or the next day.

I've been looking at as many posts as I could find... picking up bits and pieces of the process.

On a scale of 1-10, what level of difficulty would you give this? I'm a weekend warrior, at best, but learning.

The bleeding process sounds a bit challenging. What I'm gathering is get a hose and jar of fluid to keep air out of the system as it's bled.

Hoping I don't have to loosen or play with the master brake cylinder to get the clutch out.

Any insights, and warnings about common pitfalls appreciated.

Thanks in advance for your time and help.

(We've had both the 90 and 91 Camry's for years. Great cars. Both have over 200k and still getting 27-34+mph. Thank you Toyota.)

Everything is pretty straightforward. Make sure you have a second person for the bleeding procedure, and you get your terms (communication) right....

Pump up and down a few times, hold, open bleeder, close bleeder, pump, repeat. For a while, you will probably have to pull the clutch pedal off the floor when pumping. Use standard brake fluid and clean any spills off the paint ASAP.

Good luck!

I did a clutch master on my 86 Camry years ago. Your new master comes with the rod that attaches inside the car to the clutch pedal. Once you have the old master out and before installing the new master, line up the old and new masters and adjust the length of the new rod to the exact overall length of the old one. This will save you from having to adjust the rod length from under the dash once the new one is installed. That job is a lot easier outside the car than from under the dash.
