HELP!! ECON blinking light

I recently purchased a 1987 Toyota camry with 242,500 miles. The a/c was working perfectly until yesterday. The ECON and A/c lights "blink" when I press on either of the buttons. The a/c is no longer cooling.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

That's the 'error' signal from the A/C computer. There is a problem in the A/C system somewhere.... It might be low refrigerant pressure, it might be a bad A/C clutch or some other problem.

Any signs before the A/C went out?

It could be as simple as the A/C belt slipping. Check the belt tension and check the belt itself for glazing.

WOW!! Thank you both for your quick response!! There was no previous indication of the a/c not cooling. I will check the belt first and more than likely have a mechanic check for leaks, clutch, or any other problem. Thank you once again for your guideance.

Is there anything else I can do before spending money to take it to a mechanic?

Update

My a/c started to work again without having to do anything to it. Unfortunately, it only worked for a couple of days then it stopped working. The ECON light was blinking again. This morning it was not working, but just now I went to turn it on, and it is working again.

Do you guys feel it could be low on freon?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

It could still be the same things I mentioned in my first post above. See if you can find an A/C shop that does a free diagnosis and go from there.

Thank you!!

Just wanted to thank you for guiding me to find the problem with my a/c. I finally got around to taking my car to a mechanic and he replaced the a/c relay. He says I have to replace the "fuse box" where this relay goes because there seems to be a short there.

My a/c has not shut off since then. I will try to find the fuse box to replace in the future.

Thank you once again!!!

Thanks for posting the solution.

Try the local salvage yards for the fuse box.
