Gas Light

When does everyone's gas light come on? Mine seems to be a bit early...but will still take over $40 worth when i fill up. (How big is the All Trac tanks?)

Mine comes on about a 1/3 tank...in the middle of the half tank/quarter tank marks. Is this normal?

It is common failure of the thermistor located inside a metal test bulb (in the fuel tank). When uel level is getting low and stop cooling such resistor it is getting hot and its resistance drops causing current to flow in the lamp circuit. As it getting older it shorts out.

$40 worth of gas means nothing. How many gallons?

I normally fill up my Alltrac with around 12-13 gallons. I think I may have gone as high as 14. The tank size is listed as the same as the FWD Camry, I'm not sure if that's true - something like 16 gallons (you won't be able to run the tank dry, so a 14-15 gallon fill up would be the absolute max). The gas tank is a different shape and in a different location than the FWD tank.

As Dr. J said, the low fuel light and the fuel level are two separate circuits. You may have a bad low fuel light thermistor, a bad fuel level sender or a bad fuel gauge. Figure out whether you can live with it as it is or you want to fix it...

I want to say i put in like 13 or 14 gallons, and i could of put more in. Im guessing the light is correct, and the gauge isnt...normally the light comes on with 2 gallons left, and if our tank is 16, thats about right.

my light comes on when my needle hits or is nearing the white line on E

It works for a 2-3 gallon warning. Which is fine by me. Ive driven cars which leave no time for filling once the light is on.

I prefer the early warning haha

Mine comes on when the needle is on, or very near, E. I usually have 2-3 gallons left at that time. As mentioned it's better to be warned before you're dangerously low.

As an "Old Harley rider" the method I use;

I reset my trip meter with each fill up, my light comes on anywhere between 286mi and 300mi, it then goes off and later comes back on at ~ 320mi, it remains on until I fill up the tank which I do between 376mi to 386mi, it takes about 14.5 gallon leaving about + ½ gallon which is equal to about another 12 to 15 miles of travel @ 30 to 35 mpg (my average)
