Plastigage - use old or new bearings to measure?

I am starting to put the motor back together and am wondering about measuring oil clearance. Do I use the old bearings or new ones? Logic says the new one because the old would be worn, but still have no idea. If I measure the journals and they check out to spec, then would that conclude that new standard bearings would be fine?

Kind of confused reading your post, but I assume you removed the crank, then you bought new bearings to replace the old ones?

If you're originals were standard and you didn't have the journals grinded down then you would use new standard size rod/main bearings. You would use the green plastigauge on the new ones (and old ones if you aren't replacing all of them) to make sure you have the right clearance on all bearings rods/mains.

Basically whatever you're going to be running with is what you want to make sure is correct. Don't measure the hardware that you're going to throw away.

Out of curiousity...what brand name bearings and piston rings are you using, and are you replacing the thrusts also? I used NPR rings and Taiho bearings on my 22RE, supposed to be the OEM manufacturers. They sure looked oem

I bought DNJ bearings and thrusts. I believe the rings are DNJ or Rock.
