I'm guessing you're talking more about lens mods such as clear taillights? I haven't seen anything like that. If you search around you'll find that there are HID kits but these are considered by many to be a bad idea because our headlights are reflectors and not projectors (causes glare with HIDs).

What I have done is replace the tail lights, and every other exterior bulb with LED arrays from superbrightleds.com. Every light is now brighter than original, truer color as the LED light matches the lens color, and draws far less power. I did the math and the power savings is on the order of 0.2-0.4 HP at night. The taillights also come on much quicker, which improves the reaction time of drivers behind you.

Can you throw some pictures up of your tail lights? I've been thinking of doing the same with superbright's LED arrays

The LED thing is something I'm plan on doing. More so for the fact they don't burn as hot, and the car is old. Plus like u said a bit less usage on the power.
