re: 1990 LE Sunroof...

Aloha Folks-

Looking at a 1990 LE Camry for my mother and all is pretty good but that the sunroof does not open. It is closed all the way from what I can tell. If I wanted to try and fix this would I be able to get the parts from a salvage yard? What part should I get? Is it a crap-shoot in regard if they work or not? Does one have to take out the head-liner in order to work/service this area? Look forward to any and all advice. Thanks so much. Mahalo!

Locating parts at salvage yards is usually no problem, one of the beauties of Ol’ Toyota’s

To troubleshoot (TS) the mechanicals the headliner comes out, some of the electrical TS can be done without R&R headliner.

Search this forum under sunroof problems, this is a multitude of B/O (bad order or defects) and repair information

Ditto to a salvage yard.

I searched car-part.com and bought the complete assembly for $100 within a reasonable distance so I picked it up. Maybe I was lucky but the new motor worked and a guy I know did the r/r but the labor was pretty expensive.

re: sunroof

Aloha Musikmann and Stur-
Thanks for your help. I wish I had the Toyota Service Manual as the Haynes is just very basic. I might try car-part.com. Thanks for that.

This is a great resource. As you'll discover they catalog salvage yards all over the country. The nicest thing is you can search by distance and condition and I think that maximizes the often crap shoot when buying used parts.

I've done a lot of work on the sunroof of my 88LE. Recently it would get stuck and not move when I touched the overhead switch. I pulled the switch assembly out and carefully took it apart. There were copper circuit board contacts with corrosion and tarnish. I got a piece of Scotchbrite pad and scrubbed the contacts clean and carefully put the switch back together. Sunroof works like brand new every time now.

Before I had to keep pushing and pushing (the switch) again to get the inside contacts to work.

Prior to all that I had to replace the broken cables with ones from the dealer that cost over $200 for the pair.
