gen 1, gen 2 etc - what are they?

I know this is a real newbie question but, what's with this "gen" stuff?

I tried searching but couldn't find anything that related gen to year.

I'm not sure about Generation 1 and Gen 2, but
Gen 3 is 92 - 96
Gen 4 is 97 - 01
Gen 5 is 02 -

Also note that there are differences between early gen3's ('92 & '93) and the later gen3's

The difference between the Gen 2 and 3 are the lights... You can always tell..

Well, not sure about the 2006 part, but usually Toyota goes for 5 model years between major redesign.
