5S-FE powered Camry All-Trac build thread

I promised pictures would arrive when the project was officially started, so here we go!

I'll be detailing the general necessities in this thread as well... And will do something nobody else has done yet- post pics of the modification needed to mate a 5S to an All-Trac trans (transfer case hits the block)

I only just got started with the engine today. It's got great compression, so I think it'll be a fun car when finished.

So you start with this:

Then you buy these:

(Fidanza Part #130331, Fidanza lists a different one for the Camry All-Trac but that's 'cause they assume a 6-bolt crank. You want this one if you have a later 5S)

And then do something like this so as to check out the engine:

The Jesus engine

(no photo editing programs were used, I swear!)

More pics to come... Whenever. If anyone has questions about anything, post them up and I will endeavor to answer them.

Okay, I got bored and decided to post some more up tonight.

Go ahead and fiddle about up here

and down here

To make sure everything checks out. Needs new rod bearings- the old ones aren't ruined but there is some light scoring (no pics of that tonight, but probably will be tomorrow) so I figured I may as well replace them while I'm in there.

The oil pump gasket is being a stubborn little sob about coming off cleanly. It's been several hours and a lot of scraping with various tools to get it this far.

Note that nasty water. The front of the pump was covered in grime... I suspect failed o-ring, as when I pulled the cover off the o-ring was extremely hard and disintegrated as I pulled it out.

And here's my evening view from where the engine is. Sorry for the blurriness- the camera didn't like the wildly varying light levels much.

The motor looks used but not hammered. Make sure you replace the two rubber hoses that feed the (factory!) oil cooler with OEM parts. They are a bitch to replace once the exhaust is in place. The equivalent hoses on the 3s-gte are called the "Hose From Hell" and the "Hose From Hell On Earth" - both like to pop at around 100k miles and at the worst time.

You are going to enjoy the nice bump in power with that engine and the light flywheel. I'm most curious about the transfer case mounts/stiffeners and if they bolt up.

From what I have read, they will not. You need to grind the block down to clear the transfer case and you can either run it without the brace (safe but I wouldn't recommend it) or you need to fabricate a bracket...

But we'll see when I get it all in place. I'll make sure to take a lot of pictures of that stage, as nobody who has done the 5S All-Trac has ever bothered to take pics of that area.

Yeah, I've seen the pictures of how the engine block needs to be ground down, but never the brackets. It might just be some drilling and tapping... hopefully.

You have links to those pictures of the ground block? Would be nice to have reference material.

More pics coming when they get uploaded... Will be a while, my internet sucks.

UPDATES!

Got that cleaned up all pretty... Took a very long time. Used a thin film of FIPG in addition to the paper gasket to be 100% certain it would seal.

Got the new front main installed (block of wood and a deadblow to the rescue!)...

So I could then get the new timing setup on. If you look closely in this pic, you'll see my timing was off. I got that fixed... There are two marks up top and that threw me off pretty bad.

Like I said- the bearings were scored but nothing major. Nothing in the bottom end looked like it ever got too hot.

Check out this handiwork I found on the distributor...

Gorgeous, isn't it? I'm glad I'm reusing the 3S distributor with this setup.

Anyways! Back to the bottom end. I got the bearings all replaced, figured it was cheap insurance with as deep as I was.

Best. Stuff. EVAR!

Just goop it onto the bearing surfaces (I do the backside as well, but you don't need to. Just makes me feel better)

Look at that beautiful forged crank.

Thought that as long as I was playing with assembly lube, I'd put some on the contact surfaces in the head...

Got my oil pickup reinstalled... Wasn't too bad. I opted for a thin bead of FIPG over paper gasket- partly because I couldn't find a gasket anywhere but mostly because I've had exceptional luck using the FIPG. Works a real treat.

Here's the engine just before I stuck the oil pan on... No pics of that. Too damn cold outside.

The beard... IT COMMANDS ME!

Anti-reflective coating my ass.

Start:

Got the ribs ground down. I can take more pics if anybody wants me to, though I've already painted over the exposed metal... They won't be as clear as if it were still bare.

Start out something like this.

You'll want to grind down the nub right above the oil pan so it's flush with the little rib that runs along the bottom of the block. That hole in the middle will eventually be ground completely out- the metal will be 100% smooth.

You want to get the middle of the ground area generally flush with the block- a little bit of standout will be okay but you want to mostly remove these ribs.

Your finished (but unpainted) product should look something like this:

I can get a couple pics from different angles to make things clearer, but like I said- I've already painted over it. The ground areas won't stand out quite as well.

More pics of the ground area are uploading now. Figured I would take a bunch of pictures to hopefully give a clear idea of what is required to anyone else who may want to do this.

I'm looking at you, Charlie. It's your destiny to run a 5S-GTE.

EDIT: If I have any other updates today, they'll come really late. I have to get the garage cleaned out some before I can roll the 'Trac in to start pulling it apart.

Clearer pics of the block are here!

The paint is almost the same color as the block was stock... Hard to tell for all of the grease and whatnot.

From the bottom toward the top, to give a profile view of the new ribbing layout.

From the back toward the front.

This one is from the top down to give a different point of reference.

Clearer pic of the nub at the top.

From the front of the engine toward the back.

Slightly blurry closeup of the grinding closest to the back end of the block.

Closeup of the grinding closest to the front.

Closer picture from the front toward the back.

I have seen some pictures of the grinding necessary before - that wouldn't hold me back. Its good for other people who haven't done things like this to see what it takes though.

Funny thing about the garage - I spend 6-7 hours on Sunday re-organizing the garage, and I'm only about halfway there to making space for two cars again (things got a little messy during the motor swap...). The hardest part is throwing parts away that I probably will never have a use for again. I do have the motivation to get it done though, as now one of my cars has to be out in the elements overnight until I'm done...

-Charlie
