1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I just bought this 1986 camry from a little old lady who didn't drive it hard at all (although it did look like she drove it OVER alot of things) but it's got an automatic transmission and isn't all too fast (I'm still used to the shelby charger I had before). Is there anything I can do to get this 2S-ELC up to a little better moving pace? exhaust? timing advance? engine swap? possibly even turboing this engine? Do the map, mas, injectors, fuel pump and ECU understand the idea of boost? Does this model share springs with any other model car? Stress bars? DOHC head? headers?
Any and all info will be helpful and appreciated.
Thanks in advance,
-Colin
Good luck getting a response in here I own an 86 camry standard Its pretty peppy with the stick havent drivin an auto yet, Im thinking about putting it on the bottle till I can afford another car. Pretty much for sh*ts and giggles.
don't quote me on this but im sure the first generation has a chassis similar to the second generation camry so you should be able to drop 3s-ge or 3s-gte into it which are celica and mr2 turbo engines. Body kits should fit from for any second generation.
As for the engine there is nothing buddy.
Racesearch.com has wires and thats about it for the engine and KYB shocks for 45$ each.
Now that I've had it for a while, I'm definately stoked on the reliability and efficiency, although I still wish she had a litle more get up and go. I've got a K&N drop-in in there and a bigass funny looking muffler - but these helped my gas milage, not horsepower. If I advance the timing any more I get pings.
Someone in here said they removed some restrictors from the intake sytem... where are these? Anything else I can open up??
Sadly, most of the performance parts available for 1986 Toyotas seem to skip the Camry. Your best bet is to salvage-yard hunt an engine, strip it, machine everything to your own tolerances, and swap, you could potentially squeeze a lot of power out of that little motor this way, but it will cost a pretty penny.
Making the 86 Camry breath better does improve mileage, but that's it. I've come to find that 99% of anything I want to do to upgrade mine, must be custom. There just aren't many performance parts out there specific to this model.

White 1986 Toyota Camry LE, I paid $200.00 for it!
Looking for a 1986 or earlier Corolla (doesn't have to be a sport or Trueno trim level, just want a 5 speed RWD corolla.) in the $1000 range.

The first generation chassis is very different from the second generation chassis. I do not believe the engine bay is large enough for a 3sge/3sgte to be swapped it. No body kit will fit perfectly.
As for the car; there is quite a bit you can do:
1) Audio upgrading(hu, speaks, woofers?)
2) Engine electrical modifications; whereas toyotas have slight electrical problems(upgrading grounds, terminals, alternator, battery)
3) Maintenance with premium filters and fluids
4) Custom exhaust; whereas 98% of mufflers are universal(catback system, high-flow exhaust)
First gen Camry have a completely different chassis to that of the Gen 2. No body kit will on a Gen 1 from a Gen 2 with out mods, especially the width of the f and r lips, as the gen 2 is wider slightly. The engine bay will not fit a 3SGTE or 3SGE or even a 3SFE without modding it. It's a lot of work but if you love you car, i say go for it. It would be one of the first Gen 1 with those sorts of mods i think!!

3SGE will not fit as userlain said (and JetspeedCamry repeated ) w/o extensive chassis modification.
Pretty much any engine in the 4A series should nearly fit, naturally some mods will be required. Good luck w/ whatever you decide to do
