1990 Camry thermostat slow to warm up, slow to go into overdrive

I have a 1990 Camry, approx. 133k miles. The temperature gauge is slow to heat up and the overdrive will not kick in until the temperature gauge is past a certain point.

Not sure if I need to change the thermostat, already purchased one from Toyota, or look for another solution.

Thanks,

38dean

Your Overdrive is fine. The Camry is designed to kick into overdrive once the engine reaches a certain temperature. As far as your thermostat, My camry takes about 10 minutes of running before the temperature hand will even show the slightest sign of movement and I just recently replaced mine.

Thats normal.

Theres a O/D water temp switch that screws into the thermostat housing.

The purpose of this switch is to enable o/d when the water temp is high enough. Or disable o/d when the water temp is to cold (engine not up to operating temp).
