I have a freind with an 88 camry with a 2.0 4cyl engine that makes makes metal to metal sound (harsh clatter) that increases with engine speed. It is so bad that i couldnt even stand to run the engine for more than a few seconds. At first i thought maybe the timing belt slipped and the sound was the valves hitting the pistons. I checked the gates website and it says that this is not an interference engine (pistons dont contact valves when timing belt breaks). What are some possiblke things that would cause such a noise on a neglected 151,000 camry? Should i rule out the timing belt? What is an easy way to check for a slipped belt?
Thanks in advance, Daniel

Its possible that the valves are outta adjustment (vavle lash). I have 165,000+ miles on mine and it ticks a little bit but, nothing like what your talking about.

There is no easy way to check it.

1. Remove the spark plugs (makes it easier to turn the engine over by hand).

2. Using a socket and rachet on the bolt of the crank pulley turn the engine over till the #1 piston is at TDC (top dead center).

You'll know the #1 piston is at TDC by lining up the mark on the crank pulley to the 0 degree mark on the timing belt cover.

3. Remove the timing belt cover.

4. Check and see if the mark on the timing belt lines up with the mark on the camgear.

5. Tell your buddie to buy a Chiltons, Haynes, or Toyota repair manual for his car.

Now i am thinking it may be the oil pump and the noise is coming from a part of the engine that is seriously damaged. Checking it out today.
