2nd Generation GEN 2 87 Camry odd occurances

Alright I have 2 odd occurances with my camry after startup

1) I was at a gas station and I reversed and when I put in drive she sputtered and the engine cut out on me . while in park i popped the hood and manually reved the throttle it sputtered but after i kept revin the throtle it was fine and i drove off

2) within the last 2 1\2 weeks ago i had been drivin all day got home turned off the car 5 min later got in the car tried to start camila she turned over i let go of the key and she imediatly stopped, i tried a couple of times same result again i poped the hood had someone turn her over and i imediatly mannualy reved the throtle and kept her reving for about 40sec let off and she was fine. i shut her off turned her over and was fine

this has happened over the last 1 1\2 6-8months apart

I have had all the tranny pumps and seals replaced and a full tune up. Am I losing power ??

Any ideas yall

Has it been raining, or wet out lately? I drove about 250 miles through pouring rain, and had similar problems, it would crank, but once you let go of the key, it shut off, which usually means that there's water in the fuel line. I did the same thing, kept cranking it and manually revving it, I also reset the fuel injector by pulling the EFI fuse, letting the car crank a few times, then putting the fuse back in. I haven't had any troubles since, but I do realize that there's probably something wrong somewhere...

If the distributor cap and plug wires are relatively new (they are a 1-piece unit on this car), along with the rotor, then I would replace the coil inside the distributor, especially if the problem is more noticeable in damp/rainy weather. This is a known problem with generation 2 3SFE engines. The coil developes a hairline crack and shorts itself out to any metal inside the distributor. This will occur mostly during damp weather as the moisture gives the coil another path to short itself out to ground. Don't let anybody sell you a whole new distributor as most dealers will try to do (for around $600). You can replace just the coil with an aftermarket one for around $50. This does require removal of the distributor. I got a Borg Warner coil at Pep Boys some years ago to solve this problem on a 91 3SFE engine.
