I got my Camry about a month and a half ago, it is my first car (first one I can call 'mine' at least) and its a solid car and fun to drive... It was quite a change as before I had a Chevy 1500 pickup!
I got 2 free pairs of speakers for my car and was able to replace the rear ones, but it took all this week and last week to find out enough information to access and replace the front ones, so it wont be until today that I can get them in...
As a temporary thing since one of my back speakers had a horrible rattle in it I replaced the back speakers with some classic 8" x 5.5" 50w (140 peak wattage) Jensen 2 ways...
I still have the stock headunit, but they sound a whole lot better than the stock 15 watters...
To get them mounted, I removed the grill from the original speaker covers and cut the cover to fit the extra wide speaker. The cover keeps the speakers high enough and centered so the mag fits in the original hole and does not interfere with the trunk release bars... Holes were drilled in the metal under the deck to fasten the speakers down... when the screws are tightened it pulls the weak deck downward but keeps the speakers from rattling... this is only temporary...
I plan to replace the deck and re-mount the speakers in a more solid manner and solder on the speaker wires...
The front speakers are 6" 50w (100 or 120 watt peak) Audiovox 3 ways. It's obvious they wont fit in the dash so I am planning on building some kickpods but currently dont have the money to build them (explained below...) so instead I am building some temporary wood boxes to house them on the floor pointing straight up in front of the seat... I'd just like to see them in there and see how they work before spending money, time and work on something permanent...
I figured out how to get the stereo out and which wires are which so I am going to just snip the front speaker wires off near the HU connector and attach the wires that came with the speakers...
Eventually I want to buy a new stereo with more power (proabably wont go for an amp and separate tweeters mids and subs) with an AUX input for my ipod...
Until then I have a FM transmitter but it recieves a large amount of interference from my car and is real low quality...
I could just buy a tape adaptor but I am wondering if there is any way to get an auxiliary input into it?
When I have aux input capabilities I will be building an iPod dock to take advantage of the
supposed preamp output from the iPod's dock connector...
Well, the reason I dont have the money to buy and build what I want right now is that I crashed the car about 4 days after getting it... I was braking while going down a hill in the rain and I hit a real slick patch in the road and the brakes locked up completely and I slid straight at a turn....
My front left wheel hit a cement block denting the rim, ripping the axle off, causing strut damage and more which led to a new shock being put in... It also bent the frame and set the left side a 1/2" back so it had to go to the body shop and all said and done cost $1200... the car was $1700....
Thats not all though.. after the cement block there was a fence and a tree... the fence fell like humpty dumpty and the tree broke off about 2 feet up from the ground... the front of my car was held up by a fencepost and a brand new tree stump... the bumper was totally fine, the metal skirt under it suffered some damage and one turn signal lense/housing was broke.... The lenses on the parking lights were broken off, but the rest of it was fine.
A few dents were also put on the left fender and on the hood but otherwise the outside of the car held up amazingly...
The front turn signals do not work at all, as far as I can tell the bulbs are fine, the connections are fine, its just the left one has a busted up housing and no lense. All the wiring seems fine from underneath and from above, anyone know what the problem may be? all the other lights work...
I was counting my lucky stars that there were no other cars out on the road that dangerous situation... I slid pretty far in the opposite lane, it could have been bad...
The car runs fine though now, it pulls to the right a little but it still drives solid and doesn't give me any problems when I pass people...
Last but not least, pics!
I didn't have enough time to send this post earlier, so here is the completed front speakers....
It took far to long to complete with the tools at hand, but I think it turned out pretty good and it sounds much better than the stock speakers....
Thanks for reading...
