1988 Cruise Control Question

I recently bought a 1988 Wagon, 4 cylinder, automatic tranny. The cruise control doesn't work. The light on the cruise dash switch never comes on? What steps should I take to diagnose the problem?

Well the first thing I would do is make sure that the fuse isn't blown and that the switch is wired up. Some people will rig up anything and may have disconnected it.

Hi, I have 1988 Camry LE (3SFE). Cruise Control doesn't work at all. But the the button seems OK. If I push it, the green light comes on, if I push it again, it turns off. Even when the light is ON, I cannot set the cruise control from the Cruise/Wiper Arm button. Any ideas?? It will be really helpful for me to drive from NY to FL driving about 2300 Miles. Thanks in advance.

*The FUSE is working & fine*

You may want to start by checking under the hood to see that the throttle cable assembly is set up properly. There should be one throttle cable coming out from the firewall by the brake booster, and it should run over the valve cover to the passenger side fender wall. This is where the cruise assembly is located (there's a cylindrical plastic housing covering the linkages and servos). A second throttle cable should then emerge from this assembly, running back towards the throttle body and the butterfly valve (roughly in front of the driver's position).

I've seen cars where the original set-up was replaced by a throttle cable from a non-cruise equipped car, eliminating the cruise system entirely.

All the connections seem OK to me.

Do I have to replace the Control Unit?? In that case I found a used one on Ebay about $40 Including S&H.

Thanks.
