Got a free 90 V6 Camry... but tranny problem.

Hey guys,

As you all can see I'm a noob to the camry world but I just got a free car from my neighbor. A 1990 V6 Camry. The car runs great, engine is mechanically sound (I hope) but knowing nothing about camrys I can't seem to put my finger on my transmission problem. My dad has some mechanical skills but has never worked on toyotas before so I learn from him.

I did a search and I did find one post with a similar problem but unfortunately he didn't find the answers that would help him.

Here's my case, I'm sorry guys but please be patient and help me out. If the car is left for a few days and not started, when you take it for a drive, it will drive ok for a while until the engine heats up. Once that happens the transmission will slip as though it is in neutral. When this happens no matter what gear you shift to, it would be as though you're stuck in neutral. To get the tranny to engage again, you have to turn off the car for a few seconds put it in park, and then restart the car. The tranny will engage for about a mile, not even, then it would slip again.

Has anyone encounter something like this? Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks everyone!

Cool

Warm the car up and check the fluid when it's running.
