1st & 2nd Generation (1983–1986 & 1987-1991)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1983-1986 & 1987-1991.
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I recently acquired an 85 Camry LE Sedan, 5spd manual, everything stock. It has 73k miles, so I expect it will last a long time. What are my options for replacement engines? I don't think modding this 95hp 4-banger is necessarily a practical choice, when I could put in a new, stronger engine and mod that.
Eventually I'd like this car to be a sleeper, so I'm not looking for visual upgrades at all, just performance and interior.
welcome noob..... engines for a sleeper......anything is possible....depends on your wallet and enthusiasm. mad props on the gen 1 score.....real low miles for that vintage
exahust work, custom cams, webber/holly carb (think gen 1 still had carbs) higher cr and boring out the block .... looking at some mad na power (from what it was)
and engine replacemts only limit is your wallet

^ and leaving it that way!
What are some suggestions for a new engine? Should I stick with this one? If I did, how much horsepower/torque could I expect to achieve?
Obviously there are many engines that would be bad choices (too big, too heavy, too strong, won't fit) - so what are some suggestions on possible replacements?
Maybe I'm oversimplifying this, too. A quick check for a price range shows used engines anywhere from $500 to up past $3000. Strong acceleration and pleasant sound are more important to me than high top speed.
Honestly, you have a MINT 85 motor... I mean, if I were in your position, I would keep it clean as possible and keep a CLASSIC. Get yourself a honda or an acura or a different Toyota (read: newer) to mod up.

yea i'd just keep that thing around for a daily driver. it will last forever with that low miles. There are much better cars to start with for modding, not all of them have to be newer and more expensive either. I picked up a rx7 for $600 that didn't need too much work to get it back in good shape.
