87 Camry Wagon A/C Issues!!!

(Cross listed to the Introduction forum)

I was fortunate to find this car in February with only 99K on the odometer -- garage kept and one owner -- with all of the service records.

But, alas, things are happening now. I'll post those to the general forum.

I would really like to get info on A/C issues in this model. It gets damned hot in Oklahoma (it's about 100 degrees today, and humid). When I purchased the car, the A/C was working, albeit not as cold as I thought it should be, but working. Then it stopped cooling in June. The LED never did flash like I have read that they do. I took it to my regular mechanic who warned me that he only did recharges on A/C units -- no repair. We thought she might just be a little low on freon. Well, she took two cans, and three days later the LED starting flashing and the A/C quit running. Today, I kicked on the A/C and heard the compressor kick on for about 2 seconds, and then stop. Just blew hot air.

So, before I blindly go sinking a lot of money into the A/C, can someone throw me a few pointers or suggestions? I've read it could be as simple as a fuse or the high pressure switch locking down because of too much or too little freon.

Thanks everyone!!!

if you had a good ac guy he would of hooked up his manfold and also charged it with r12 if the systrem hasnt already been converted. if the system wasnt and you mixed gas. you need to compleatly flush he ac system evac it and find a new ac tech. but sounds like it might be the high pressure switch.

and search for a old post i did on coverting a system to r134a

Thank you! Hubby will be checking all that out.

I should have went to another mechanic to begin with. He's been fabulous on my 88 Suburban, 97 V8 AWD Explorer and a now defunct 94 Corolla (daughter totalled it). However, he hired a helper and I find myself going back to re-fix things lately. Sigh.

Is the High Pressure Switch an easy find on the engine?

Chronoti, you have been suggesting this switch (apparently also called dual pressure switch) as a possible fault more than once on the forum. Could that switch be the same as the "A/C high pressure switch" which seems to be responsible for spinning the cooling fans (in some unknown case, presumably when something is wrong with the condenser pressure, when the engine is cold and the A/C off)?
I'm desperately trying to physically locate that switch to no avail. I have a '90 V6, it seems you're not familiar with this year's model, but maybe someone else could help me there: where the hell is the "A/C high pressure switch"?

thanks !
