86 camry - fuel system?

i recently bought an 86 camry., everything seemed to run fine until the first time i took it on a highway trip. i noticed that as you down shifted it would spatter (backfire) times. the secondare ignition has just recently been replaced, (i checked it out and seems fine) and the timming was also fine. so yesterday i filled up the tank and put some fuel injector cleaner in. i took the car for a drive on the freeway and when i stoped it i caould not get it going again. i nboticed the fuel filter was leeking at the top so i replaced it and still cannot get the car to fire up properly. it does somewhat start and barely run at about 800rpm, but i can seem to get it to fire up. when you push the accelerator it will put up to 100rpm but you can't even get the engine reving. any ideas what could cause this? suggestions?

My best guess would be a weak fuel pump or a bad fuel pressure regulator. You need to put a gage on the valve on the fuel rail and check fuel pressure. You will need to get a manual to look up the spec. You may also have a clogged cat. You can try temporarily disconnecting the cat and see if the car runs any better.

Good luck.
