Half Shaft Removal 1991 Camry

Hey guys,

I am having some problems getting the drivers side half shaft out. The hanes manuel is kinda unclear. I have the axle out of the hub, but I am stuck at the part where I took out all the 12mm (about 8 I think). Now does that cover come off and there should be about 6 more bolts and the half shaft should then come off? Any pointers or easier instructions than the hanes manuel would help me. Thanks,

Katie

Are you trying to remove the axle fromt he flange that is actually inserted into the tranmission. If so it is much easier to jsut remove the entire thing. All you need is a large prybar. Set the prybar against the trnsmission in between the flange and the transmission. Then jsut pop it real quick. It shouldnt take you more than two or three times popping it and it will come right out.I cant say taht I have ever removed the bolts that actually hold the half shaft onto the flange. I hope this makes sense. Are you rebuilding the half shaft or jsut replacing it with a new one.

Well I was going to just replace the boot on the outer shaft...but I think on safetys sake I will probably just replace the whole thing. I was trying to save time and money because it looked like you could take the half shaft out without draining the tranny fluid the other way. It ended up taking more time. Thanks,

Katie

you will not have to drain the tranny fluid if you pull the half shaft out. You may spill a little bit but it will be a negligible amount.Trust me it is a lot easier to just pull the shaft then pop the new one in.

I replaced the entire driver's side shaft a couple of weeks ago. Prying on the shaft popped it out. No fluid came out but I had the car jacked up pretty high on the drivers side. However, I did notice that the old shaft had what appeared to be an oil seal that the new shaft didn't have. So far it's working OK but I probably need to check the fluid level.
