1992 Lexus ES300 instrument lights

My wife has a 1992 ES300 that the instrument / dash lights are going out. The lights on the left hand side of the speedo do not work. WHat is required to fix this problem? Are there any lights that can be replaced, or does the whole cluster have to be replaced?

I posted this on the Lexus forum, but I guess Lexus owners typically just take their cars to the dealership for service!

if its the background then you can replace the bulbs, if its the speedo needles than you will have to send it out. also visit clublexus.com and search their database for your particular model.

the lights for the back display can be replaced from the rear, but the needles go dimmer and dimmer as they age, this is the ULTIMATE replacement.

the bulbs behind the cluster can be replaced for cheap. the needles are expensive. like others indicated club lexus has a member who does this 'repair/rehab' needles to your color choice. new cluster from lexus costs 750+tax, junkyards are not an options as their needles are usually gone too....

try banging the shit out of it. I was looking for the same answer for my g/f's es300. The lights for the radio was out, so I posted somewhere in a lexus forum and they said to get it a good bang. You know what, it worked! try that, if it doesn't ...... hey the new avalon looks pretty good!

"try banging the shit out of it" LOL i was going to also suggest that in my first reply. it does work, worked on my previa and sc400 which are both early 90's and built in japan.

dont bang the shit out of it... all that does is rattle the lightbulb... if you want to do that, do it the right way and take it apart and rattle it by hand.
