3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I am going to get a hitch on my Gen3 1993 Camry. There's a bunch of places that install them around here, and I narrowed it down to a couple places. I am looking to tow a 2 place snowmobile trailer with 1 snowmobile on it (probably 700 lbs total sled + trailer). I already have heavy duty brake pads all the way around, new winter tires, and a tranny oil cooler, so it should be up to the task.
Place #1 is the lowest price, and their hitch they use looks nice. They say the factory wiring is more than capable to run the lights on the trailer.
Place #2 is the highest priced, about $100 more than #1. They also say that the Camry's wiring is not adequate for trailer lights, and requires a $100 module that needs to be wired direct to the battery in order to not damage the existing wiring in the car.
I would only be using the trailer maybe 3 or 4 times per year, so does anyone out there have a Gen3 Camry that they have used to tow with and did you have to have the module installed? Or do your lights work just great without it?
My trailer has a couple running lights, I have LED bulbs on all those, so those draw just about nothing. The turn signals on the trailer are standard "1157" bulbs.
you should be fine- especially if you're using LEDs on your car lights
worse come to worste, you can run a wire yourself and use a relay for less than a hundred bucks, but I doubt that would be necessary since the bulbs pull little power
if anything, since you didn't mention that you had a v6, is that you're going to be as slow as hell going uphill with a trailer, people in your car, and a 4banger

I had trailer lights without a module on my 92 and the tail light electric system had to be replaced because of them. It worked for a few years though.
Having 2ea 1157 bulbs should not be problem for electrical system. If you were to load down the system with too many light bulbs, tail, running and brake lights this can be problem. The manufactures and vendors of these modules have electrical load criteria for usage. Do a web search on this.
The other concern would be the hitch design. Some of these hitches swing low around the muffler causing a decreased ground clearance. The hitch will then hit the ground when going up over curbs and driveways. Might look for a hitch without this bow design around the muffler, have seen them.

My valley hitch has the bow under the muffler and yes it does hit the ground from time to time. It has definately saved my muffler from hitting the ground though . As long as you become more aware of the areas where it bottoms out you will learn how to drive without letting it hit.

i have a hitch on mine and i pulled a jet ski with stock wiring all the way to ocala from ft lauderdale no problems, however ifyou get on the highway with loads of wind the car may want to kick out of o/d. but it will be fine, is it weld on or bolt on?
