Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
wat up fellas i'm 17 and i just bought a 92 toyota Camry LE I4. Before i was driving my mom's 98 mitsubishi galant and i am part of a galant forum called the Galant Center. my friend from TGC found this toyota forum for me and i'm happy. you guys are just as nice as my peeps back over at the TGC. anyway i'm happy that i chose to buy the camry over a honda civic9my other choice). the civic as a 93 but the dealer was asking way too much for it. i have one question for right now. for auotmatics, there's a little button by the gear shift. it says ECT power. its not on the galant so i have no idea wat its for. please enlighten me.
That thing is what Toyota calls "POWER" mode, which makes the gear shifting later compared to "ECONOMICAL" condition. So you don't really need unless you got too much fuel to burn...

It's actually supposed to downshift into a lower gear more faster...
Say I'm going 55km in third gear...if I go WOT with the ECT on, my car downshift into 2nd and take off....
If I didn't have it on, my car probably would have stayed in third....
If you're WOT, your car should shift as late as possible, regardless if the ECT is on or off...that's what everyone says on CM. But I agree with Benyu, it seems my car will shift earlier if I have it off.
I always turn it off right when I start driving...on the highway, it's alway on.

yeah, i think you guys mean the overdrive switch. or is it one of those "fancy" auto trannies with a selectable performance?
The overdrive button is basically fourth gear in our car. If you turn it off, you only get 3 gears in our Camrys.
The ECT (power) button is one of those "fancy" auto trannies as explained above.

Anyway I actually had some crazy thoughts about that ECT button when my dad bought 96 Camry LE V6 in October 1996 (our family's first car in Canada and it's still running well).
I thought it would be like this...(I was 13 by then) ECT off - 3.0L V6, sheep Camry. ECT on - 3.5L V8, wild Camry!!!
Anyway I still hope this concept works...I will do some study on the feasibility.

For me WOT is the same as ECT on and no WOT. I think its that way for most people with ECT buttons.
Maybe your car is too advanced! haha

Not totally, my 96 with ECT off will shift before 5K even when it's WOT in 1st gear.
