4th Generation 3rd gear Gen 4 issues

When accelerating in 3rd gear the engine reaches 4000 rpms and then drops back down to 3750 rpms and then goes back up beyond 4000 rpms to the redline where it shifts into o/d. 1st and 2nd gear run smoothly but the 3rd gear backs off before going over 4000. Any suggestions as to what is wrong?? Thanks.

no offense but maybe you should stop flooring your car.

alright its called highway driving, im just wondering what is the problem, i didnt cause the weird 3rd gear problem it was just like that when i got the car. I thought nothing of it, but now since i join tn i was just wondering if you guys knew anything about it. It doesnt only happen when you floor it, it also happens when at half throttle or lower, so it is not just the added stress on the engine that does it. Anyone with any real help please reply.

theres nothing wrong with your car, mine does the same (4k RPM / 70ish MPH). My personal belief is that toyota sis it to give you a 'heads up' when you going to fast. for inspance if your listening to the music loud and your floring it to go faster, it lets you know thet you should prolly slow down before you get a ticket.

What I want to know is how so disable this. It it means going to AEM and getting the programible ingition for distributerless cars (gen4) than thats it.

It's normal.

Most people know that with the automatic, the torque convetor locks up in 4th (or O/D) gear for better fuel efficiency at highway speeds.

The torque converter will also lock up in 3rd gear if you get going fast enough. That is what you're expereincing when the RPM goes down.

It's not just a Toyota thing. My Maxima does the same thing.

Sorry but I do not believe that this is normal! Cars do not shift into overdrive at redline and the TCC should be engaging before 4k. Have you checked your fluids? have you checked for codes? If it is OBDII you should be able to have it scanned to see if it is a sensor problem or something more serious internally. A GOOD tranny shop should be able to help you out.

Gary

PS.
Does the fluid smell burnt?

all my fluids are full and changed recently, it still backs off at 4000 rpms at full throttle or barely any throttle, so i dont know what the problems is. What is the TCC anyways? Sry im not good at all the technical stuff.

I never have experienced this problem with any other automatic. The only other auto's i have driven are the 99 Acura TL with the sportshift, and a 95 Integra that didnt have that problem. The Integra and TL both increased rpms with no resistance. SO the answer to your question is no, i have never had this problem with another automatic but i havent driven another camry so i dont know for sure.

4th Generation

This might be a longshot and I might be completely wrong because you haven't given a very thorough description of the problem but here we go...

Gary 602Z might have the best response so far for you. Go check the codes, from what you've said, I think you have a tranny issue and if you let this contine, you'll wear out your tranny (not instantly but faster than normal).

Are you sure you're actually shifting in 3rd gear. If what happens is you shift into 3rd gear and then downshift immediately and then end up redlining and then shifting, you MAY HAVE A FAULTY SOLENOID. I had a problem similar to you with my Gen2 Camry. The solenoid that controlled 2nd gear was faulty so I would rev up to 4000RPM in 1st and then shift immediately to 3rd gear and then drive normally. I'm amazed Toyota did this because the computer knew 2nd was messed up but still allowed me to drive it. It didn't locked up the transmission and leave me stranded up did wear out my 1st gear.

Anyways, what I did was replace the solenoid and everything went back to normal. I put in a brand new solenoid, got it from my dad who works at the parts counter at a dealership Of course this took a few months to figure out so now my 87 has terrible initial acceleration maybe because the plantary gear for 1st is so worn out...

What I would do is look this stuff up in the OEM manual (I hate aftermarket) and see what the diagnostic procedure is for this. Hopefully, replacing the solenoid is all you need. It may also be a faulty sensor. For now, shift manual, L, 2, D with O/D off, D with O/D on and see if it shifts like before. You can drive it like this for now, its also more fun this way.

Goodluck with your car.
