3rd & 4th Generation (19921996 & 19972001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
This thread is intended to find out why the TRP Gen3 CAI did not sell and what can be done to make this a product that TN would actually purchase. If you need to find out the specs and details you can find it here.
So if you are thinking about or have seriously thought about purchasing a CAI for your Gen3 post in here with your opinions as to what you would like to be done differently in either design, quality, price, etc or if it was just a bad time of year for a GB you can simply state that. Please no flaming or arguments, if you dont like CAIs to begin with then dont post here saying how useless they are, we have dyno numbers and all to back them up so please let us keep this post concrete, concise and to the point.
Hopefully this thread will lead to a successful TRP Gen3 CAI Group Buy.
^Agreed on that. You get a bunch of people saying they'll get something if it comes out, and when it finally does, no one can pony up the money. If a 2AZ CAI came out, I'd be one of the first to send you money. But thats me. If I can't afford something, I won't make promises to buy it.

Glaring blue HID bulbs are NOT classy, and don't make your car look nice, no matter what that kid in the Civic told you.
^ Agreed.
Realistically I think what needs to be done is make a CAI compatable with all Camries from 92-2001 and extend the group buy time, not enough people might have seen the thread. Maybe advertise it on some other boards.
Also, i would really urge you guys to consider designing it as an extension of the stock intake rubber pipe that connects the airbox and the throttle body.
Also, have you considered placing the cone head of the filter right behind that side intake vent on the lower bumper of the gen 3? That would almost make it ram-air. I am farily close to setting up my own system that way if the CAI group buy does not materialize soon.
I believe a direct in-flow of air should make the power gains quite noticable.
I would've totally jumped in on it last time but I was in between jobs due to moving and had other priorities to take care of. Now depending on price i'm in.

I'm interested... but will I need anything else changed like the exhaust or anything? or can I just change to a CAI and the SAFC? And yes... I hate to say this, but price does matter and we know you guys can't sell it for too cheap.
I would be interested in a CAI but I recently purchased a K&N filter for my stock box. I'm not willing to just let $50 sit aside. Isn't a CAI worthless by itself without actually doing something to the engine itself like using a turbo charger?
Ok so the question that I would like to ask is would a design that routed the CAI into the fender provide more interest or is price just the ending factor in all of this?
I think the design wouldn't produce half as much interest as the price would for ppl with a low budget, I.E. college students... even if there is a performance increase in the updated design to justify the price, I would be drooling over the thought of having one, but can't bank enough in time for the GB.
I commend you guys for focusing on a vehicle Camry/Solara that doesn't get much attention. I wouldn't focus on anything past Gen 5. If there was proven demand, there would be products already out there. There isn't. Imagine coming up with an intake, SRI or CAI for the newest Gen 6 Camry. Be the first. Jon. p.s. don't focus on the I4, if they wanted performance they should have gotten a V6 to begin with =P
p.s. don't focus on the I4, if they wanted performance they should have gotten a V6 to begin with =P
First off, that's not totally true considering that people like me bought the car for another purpose( daily driver) and fell in love with the car. I wasn't into the camry until I owned one. Now I have a project car in my I4 scepter. (I bought the scepter panel for $240.00 if you're wondering and that's not even for performance value)
As far as the CAI is concerned, it was bad timing and a bad time frame to work with. I also have to admit that 90% of the camry community is either to cheap to buy quality parts, or don't have jobs that allow them the money to buy the mods they want for the car.(i.e. college students) In my case, I just missed the thread for the CAI and the deadline was already passed. I would have still paid the price for after GB pricing, but the GB fell through. If this GB is started again, I think you guys should incoporate a system where people either leave the full price before shipping or put in a decent deposit so that you'll know who's going to commit and who won't. After learning about you guys, I really support your work and what you're trying to do. Keep up the good work, and in the future please push for the rear disk brake conversion. I would really like to see that.
