3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
The "American Edition" was just a package, it had no bearing on where it was built. IIRC That basically means it is two tone car and has the gold package.
As of 2005, the Camry is produced at Toyota plants in Japan, Australia; and Georgetown, Kentucky, USA, with CKD assembly operations in Vietnam, Philippines; and Thailand. It is also assembled from CKD-kits at Toyota's local partners in Malaysia and Taiwan.
Check the VIN #, If the first digit is "J", it was made in Japan. If it's "1" It's made in the United States.

Who came up with this 500px wide BS?
The racks holding engines I know most of the solara V6's came from Buffalo (New York??) when the solara was being built in cambridge ontario. I do not know where the parts or assemblies came from before, but the accessories like starter and alternator came from denso in the US.

This is completely different to what he is asking. The ENGINE build location is not stated in the VIN #.
I would say that the engine was built locally, or else, came in short block form from Japan, and was finished off in the US.

Okay, so if the car is built in Japan, the engine is likely built in Japan as well, but if the car is built in US, then the engine is also from the US, correct?
One thing I don't understand is, from I have heard, the US-built camry is just as solid as Japan-built, then why do US brands cars (Ford, Chevy, etc) aren't as reliable as US-built Japanese-brand cars?
If you look on the sticker on some of the new cars it said that there is 75% of the car is made of US parts. But the other 15% like the engine and tranny was imported from Japan

If the car was built at the Georgetown, KY plant then the engine was also built at the same plant. The Georgetown plant has a powertrain plant that builds L4 and V6 engines.

It's the way the Japanese implement their product and their QC controls and the such. Back in the 50's a man named Demming (I believe that's the correct spelling) went to the to the big three auto makers and tried to show them a better way. His concept was coined TQM (Total Quality Management). The big three didn't listen, so he went to the Japanese and they listened. The rest is history. There are other things that contributed also, but TQM was a big help. When Saturn first started up, they tried that model as well. Not sure if Saturn is still doing it, as their quality has slipped. But I digress. The american worker is capable of building an excellent car, if the Unions don't get in the way.

Then how come it states on a sticker on the window of a new Camry i saw at the dealership that 15% of the car is imported from Japan....the 15% being the major parts meaning the engine and tranny?

The engine plant in Georgetown actually ships engines back to Japan if I rememebr correctly. But yes if the car was built in the US then the engine came from the US.
