3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've been thinking about starting a project to convert to a black interior, mostly just for something fun to do, but I have a few questions. Did the Gen 3 Camrys come with an option for a black interior, or will I have to paint, and reupholster stuff? Has anyone here done an interior conversion? And, does anyone know a good place to look for totaled Camry's to swap the interior out of?
they didnt come in black, so anyone with a black interior is all custom... allen did his and i think it held up well, try searching for his thread. Ive done parts of mine but not all of it, Im not very happy with how it holds up in high wear areas like in the doorjams by the carpet. Check a junkyard for parts- just be prepared to do a lot of sanding and taking little fastners out- its a big project...
I had done a lot of the interior trim parts on my car beofre I sold it. It held up pretty good, considering I didn't put a clear coat on it. I had bought a complete set extra interior trim parts and door skins. If you want them let me know, I am selling them. It allows you to not screw up your stock interior.
But its not that hard and can look great in the long run!
What does a "complete set extra interior trim parts" actually include? Is the set in black, or in another color? dysk8, do you have any pics of the parts that didnt hold up too well?
Here is a shot of the piece I am talking about- there are four in total. you can see the original ugly purpleish color coming back, passengers scrape them with their feet getting in and out- this one is actually in the best shape because im the most careful about it
search for a threaqd posted by ufoz, Ill see if I can find em for you. I know I started one about iit once too
i bet i could find some aftermarket doorjam covers. i know there were some for my old car, and it was a lot rarer than a camry, so i would be suprised if there arent any for a camry. i'll look for that thread too. thanks.
well, if i ever get $$ together and do it, i guess it will be a much more expensive project than i thought, since i cant just buy a totaled one and swap.
i found that other camry with a black interior. i didnt find the thread tho. ive seen that camry before, but i didnt notice the scratches on the doorjams until just now. you can see them on his too.
if i ever go thru the trouble to do this, i'll probably find some new jams i can mod in. but i doubt i'll do any of it, just because the car already has 171000, and im not that in love with camrys, so i want to sell it in a few years anyway.
yep, its what i start on in a week. you just need and airbrush, a little hobby compressor, and a couple of quarts of the colors you want. If you are doing a total interior, they recomended that i get both the vinyl and plastic dye so they bond better.
yep, black must be the IT color. I will let you know how it works. You should be able to get a little hobby gun for less than 50 bucks and a compressor for 100 or so.

Turbo parts for sale: t3/t4 turbo, tapped 5sfe oil pan, MR2 map sensor, MR2 turbo manifold. PM me.
I've seen this stuff in rattle cans before, vynil dye. I have heard that the rattle can stuff smells like nothing else on earth can, but that it works really well. You can get an airbrush for $20 bucks, but a $50 or so one from a hobby shop or site such as Tower Hobbies etc will probably be a better bet. badgers are good, I don't know about others. You can use a regular shop compressor, just turn it down way low. I have an adaptor for my cheapy testors airbrush, it works really well.
