my guess is that its the ignitor inside of the distributor. distributors dont go bad very often. trust me, replace the ignitor.

Broken distributor shaft? This actually happened to me on my 88 Nissan truck, check everything even compression, then i took off the dist cap and noticed the rotor spun freely!

The distributor mounting bolts were stripped and not holding the distributor tightly so there must have been enough wobble to break the shaft. Installed heli coil to distributor holes and this so far has worked - the only alternative was replacing the front timing chain cover. Which i will have to do if this problem starts happening again. (Sorry wrong forum for this one lol)
