3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
ive been having this issue with my gear shift... whenever i apply any backwards force on it (i.e. going from 1-2, 3-4, or nuetral to reverse) there seems to be no resistance. normally you feel kind of a "click" as the shifter pulls back into whatever gear. the gear will still engage but it feels very very wrong. even with the clutch engaged you can still pull the shifter back, then it springs back into place. this makes it very easy to miss second gear, and i can tell something is wrong. unfortunately i dont have my car with me at school, so i cant test the motor mounts. toyota wants too much money to just take a look at the problem, not counting fixing it.
here are some ideas of what problems could be causing it...
-motor mount(s)
-control arm
please anyone whos seen this happen or if you have an idea i would greatly appreciate it. thanks!
Though I'm not an expert on it, but it could be the transmission itself also, as the gears aren't engaged properly. I've seen pictures from the service manual of how transmission gears lock in for each gear. If one or few of them are worn out or out-of-whack, you may not have proper synchronization. Fortunately, I have no problems with my Gen3 so far.
the gears are fine, this i know because it feels the same way even when its engaged in 1,3,5. you can still pull back on the shifter about an inch- fully engaged. if it were just one or two gears having this problem, itd be different. but thanks for your response!
i should also probably explain how this happened...
one day i was backing out of my driveway, and when i tried to put it in reverse, nothing happened (happens every once in a while if you dont depress the clutch all the way). so on the second attempt to put it in reverse, i threw a little too much manpower, and jammed it in. from then on its been this way..
p.s. does anyone have a diagram of where the shifter linkage connects to the tranny? maybe in a haynes manual or something sendable via email? thanks

yeah even with the clucth all the way down trying to shift into reverse i get gear grind. fuked up shiet.
and in 1st gear .
for some reason it doesnt engage even though the clutch is pinned to the floor. Its annoying when in neutral at a red light then when it turns green you try to put it into first and it wont go the first time. I usually have to let off the clutch just a bit (about 1 inch) then it clicks in or either let off fully then press again.
had that problem fixed on my car last november.... the shifter cables are wrecked... u just need to buy a new one... now here's the part.. there's 2 of them... one is more expensive than the other.... and it costs alot to get them put back on to ur car...
ok i talked to camryRR about it, and he said i could probably see the problem underneath the car on the drivers side (where the tranny is). there are 2 pivot points and 2 cables.
by the way, forward motion is still completely normal- its just backwards that is messed up.
and thanks for all the input! i really do appreciate it guys!

hey jwa: its for sure the shifter cables.
when i did my tranny swap (just like SCEPTER300RR. coincidence?) i used shifter cables from the junk yard and im still using them to this day but thats after replacing the C-clips that hold them to the shift linkage. Check those clips for sure first then if they are ok and holding fine, then replace the cables because they aint cheap, and C-clips are a couple of bucks.
