I just purchased a Pioneer AVH-X2800BS. I was all excited to hook it up. I have a 2000 Toyota Camry XLE. I have the jbl so I need to use the Metra 70-8113 Amplifier Integration Harness. I thought everything was going well but then when I was finished and it was all hooked up there was no power to the radio. I gave up and tried to just put the old one back in but now that one wont power up either. I have no idea what I did wrong but this whole day has been a disaster. Any help at all with this install would be amazing. Please point me in the right direction here.
The wiring is exactly how it was in the beginning. Could I have blown a fuse? What would I be looking for there. Thank you so much. I think I got in way over my head on this. I thought it would be easy :/
You probably blew a fuse. Check the RADIO fuse. Replace w/ same or LOWER AMP fuse. Never higher! There should be a spare one inside the engine bay fuse box.
I've blown many...many fuses from my DIY and my laziness. If the fuse blows, recheck all your connections. There might be something crossing or were you trying to connect stuff together while it being plug in (me :hi
Going to upload a few pics in sec.
EDIT: Try refer to this.
Look for the coin holder/pocket above the hood latch
You should take note of the 'RAD-NO.2' fuse. You can also sometimes blow out the 'CIG' and 'TAIL' fuse sometimes. I crossed connections in my friends Gen3 and she had no running lights lol...
It's a mess yes...
The spare fuse is located underneath the hood.
Those three are the spare. USE THE WISELY
You can refer to my post in the other thread posted above regarding the illumination wire.
I do the same too lately. Another things I tend to grab are clips and door panel screws. I always tend to lose them too. I also grab any screws for the dash, radio and the like.
EDIT:
Don't give up! You can make it look like this after your all done
So I have a few questions about this install, I have the wiring harness that I need which is pictured, Should I have to connect any other wires besides the red, yellow, and orange? Plus also on the unit that was already in the car there are 2 jack looking black wires going into it on the right. What are those and what do I do with them when putting the new unit in. Thanks so much again. these responses so far have made this whole process so much easier. I appreciate it so much.
You will not be using the speaker cables from the headunit harness since the metra amp intergration has the RCA plugs. So you'll have the purple(violet), white, green, and gray (two of each color, one will be solid, other will be strip) that will not be used.. Example below. Pictures is of a 1987 Cressida which I've been testing a JBL amp from a 2002 Solara.
I know there might be additional cables for the double din DVD player. Gonna look in my notes, but I know you'll have a cable for the ILL(dimmer) when the headlights are turn on, hand brake (to allow DVD to play when in park) and a few other wires.
This is the standard coloring diagram that aftermarket follows. As mention, all the speaker wires are gray, white, violet (purple) and green.
Orange/white from headunit connects to GREEN (Car ILLUMINATION) on the JBL AMP connector. This wire is NOT on the Metra harness so you will have to tap into the Toyota FACTORY harness. Should be the green wire. Try refer to this. This will make the headunit dim when headlights on are.
Although I'm generally technically-adept, the idea of installing a new head unit in my 2001 Camry was scary. Mainly this was because several online and other sources state that as part of the head unit swap, it's also necessary to bypass the factory JBL amplifier and install new speakers. I really didn't want to mess with all that.
Fortunately, I took a gamble on this product and am very glad I did. Although making the connections correctly still took some care, since the wire colors/patterns on my Pioneer AVH-P3100DVD head unit didn't exactly match those on this harness, I was surprised and relieved when nearly everything worked, while leaving the original JBL amp and speakers in service!
One minor issue is that, for some reason, there is no illumination ("ILL") wire provided on this harness, which is utilized by some head units to adjust the display brightness level when the headlights are on. I really wanted this functionality for the purpose of dimming the Pioneer's display at night, so I did a little research and was able to find the right wire and make the connection manually. Should anyone else run into this issue, the wire you want to connect to is at pin 2 on the factory plug: top row, second from the left, when the factory plug end is facing you with the connector clip on top. On my car, the wire itself is green & white. No need to cut the wire if you use a clip-on connector such as this: Pico 1560D 18-14 AWG (Blue) Electrical Wiring Hot Line Quick Splice / Tap-In 5 Per Package
>>Speaker wires from HEADUNIT harnes (This you can leave alone since you are using the RCA plugs, hid it and tape it so it doesn't short each other)
White/White black
Gray/Gray black
Green/Green black
Violet/Violet Black (purple)
Violet/White Connects to reverse lamps cable (run long cable or somehow tap into reverse lights. this is so incase you ha ve a camera, the headunit knows when you are in REVERSE. Leave this alone if you have no camera.
Yellow/Black Connects to a mute button. Leave this alone IIRC
Light Green Connects (T-Tap) into Ebrake wire. There should be 1 wire going to your ebrake/hand brake that turns on the BRAKE light. Just T-Tap this otherwise you won't be able to play DVD and adjust some settings on the HU since the headunit won't know that you are stationary (requires for some option such as the Auto EQ)
Blue/White connects to the blue wire on the Metra harness.
Yep! That would work as well but I just wired mines the proper way via hand/foot brake because....I no like spend extra money lol... And yes, the pioneer detects for multiple pulse on the ebrake line, so just grounding it won't work.
Not that I watch DVDs while I drive...I don't like watching movies anyhow. Rather be going to the junkyard
Alright, so I finally got a chance to go out and get some fuses, I have the original stereo system in there and it is wired back to how it first was. I went into the radio2 fuse and replaces it. But the stereo still doesn't work or turn on. Any suggestions? I really appreciate all the help and I was feeling really confident about this whole project again but when the fuse replacement didn't get the old stereo to work I'm stumped all over again :/
Hey, don't worry too much about it. We've all made some crazy mistake and regret doing it. You'll learn in the process of troubleshooting it...as much as it being a PITA.
Besides the radio not powering on, does your tail light turn on? Does the parking lights and rear night driving lights turn on as well? Dome lights work, right? Gauge cluster (dash) lights up alright? Does your 'open door/door ajar' light turns on your dash? Trying to see if anything else might be blown.
Bingo! I finally got it! I cannot thank everyone who helped me out along the way enough. The first night I felt like giving up and you guys kept me going! Thanks a million. Another question I have that I just came across is currently I have no radio reception. Do I have to hook up its own antenna to the Pioneer radio itself? or how can I go about doing that to get a radio signal again? Maybe this weekend Ill attempt to get the back up camera set up I'm sure that will be a journey as well.
Few months ago I installed your exact unit in a 2005 Camry with the regular (non-JBL) sound system. Did you make sure to plug the antenna connector in and hook up the antenna power wires (if so equipped)?
I pulled on the cable to get it out and it ripped out of the connector. Didn't have radio until I crimped another connector on and plugged it in. These connectors are supposedly sensitive when you put a replacement on and you don't always end up getting good reception. Mine gave me no problems after, but just be warned that it's better to leave the factory connector intact. HTH
Family member's car, '95 DX model lol. He upgraded it with Boss Audio head unit and speakers, the stock ones I pulled out were marked "3W" and "4W" I think.
I think the DX trims had smaller speakers than the LE and XLE? AT lease when I went to the junkyard, they look smaller...maybe just a visual delusion.
Stock speakers that I've seen in the LE trim was 20W or 15W. To be honest, the stock Camry speakers found in the Gen3/4 was IMO superior quality versus anything modern (standard trim) speakers nowadays.
^ those adapters are the bee's knees. Used both the front and rear adapters on my '94 XLE. 6.5's up front and 6 x 9 in the back. They made installation a breeze. I usually go to Crutchfield for audio upgrades. Those guys have their act together from stem to stern. Their customer service is 5 star level.
For the Gen3 Camry that came with the 6.5" speakers (IIRC 6 spk setup), you should be able to re-use the factory toyota speaker brackets...at lease in the LE 6 spk setup in the 1995 that I worked on.
Gen4 Camry are one piece (Speaker + bracket). The only time you can reuse the bracket is on the premium speaker (JBL) models from 99-01 IIRC.
All years 92-01, you need to use adapter brackets for the rear 6x9 since the speaker and adapter uses a odd 3 mounting point and it's a metal housing w/ speaker.
That looks like a Gen3 DX. That is a pretty clean install but isn't that a tad low since the Gen3 has the license plate in the bumper VS trunk lid for Gen4.
EDIT: Lol, I manage to hit every generation BUT 4. I also did the same backup camera on a family member's 2005. I'll post pics of that within a week, unless this has been solved by then.
Okay, So I'm finally getting around to doing my backup cam. Just for clarification before I start wiring this up. Yellow RCA goes to the brownish backup cam input on back of Pioneer, The red wire coming off of the yellow RCA goes into the purple back up wire on the pioneer harness. Then the red and black power and ground wires go into the back up lights power and ground. Is that correct? Thank you.
Okay so I assumed the red/ black was positive and the white/black was negative. I connected the camera to this and then connected the RCA to the back of the head unit along with the wire to the purple backup cam wire on the harness. I get nothing. No signs of life at all with the camera. Doesn't even try to bring up an image or anything when I go in reverse. Everything else seems to still be in tact. Any suggestions? Thanks in advance.
When this happened to me, it was because the reverse lights weren't actually getting power when the car was in reverse: Neutral Safety Switch was out of adjustment.
EDIT: Sorry, forgot. Set the parking brake (I assume your PB is working properly), put the car in Reverse, and check if the reverse lights are on. If they aren't, wiggle the shifter a bit and see if they come on. If so, you need to clean/adjust your NSS.
Also, your RCA harness has the red wire on both ends...at the camera side, it needs power, aka splice it in with the positive at the taillight.
If you are still trying to complete your Pioneer install in your 2000 Camry, you need to obtain a copy of a Crutchfield Master Sheet. Wiring connections are spelled out for you and online help is even available if somehow the instructions don't seem to be complete enough.
Hope this helps,
Ted
