3rd Generation 96 camry transmission fluid

Hello:
I am about to change the transmission fluid on a 4cyl, 98000 miles.
The existing fluid is dexron III (Toyota). What seems largely available in my area is dexron IV.
If I use the dexron IV, will it provide better transmission performance for this 'older' vehicle? --or will it be better to seek out and continue using the dexron III?
Thank You.

Amsoil universal synthetic would be my choice. UOA reports come out very nice with this atf.

In my experience ...despite what they try to tell you on the bottle...the concept that one fluid causing better performance than another, is a dubious idea. Its not so important what fluid you put in, as long as its the correct one and meets Toyota specs. Just the fact that clean fluid in there is a more important factor that which brand.

Its not so much the performance...its how well the fluid lubricates and protects. If you look at UOA comparisons you'll find that some transmission fluids may contain more metal particles (shearing of metal parts in your transmission) after being drained than others.
