94 Camry Transmission Clunk

Alright my gf bought a 94 Camry (LE i believe) and its a great car, been trying to work on it a little fix some problems here and there. Ive have a Acura Integra and ive done alot of stuff on cars so im not a toal noob .

So i have a question, the car is a automatic (not somthing im used to ) and when you take off, it always makes this strange clunk noise, its not incredibly loud but you can notice it and feel it. It only happens when you take off from a stop or a pretty slow speed. I thought it was happening a certain RPM but im not sure. It almost sounds/feels as if its coming from the bottom of the car, but that doesnt really mean anything. The car runs fine, goes through the gears fine, no other noises. It could also be desribed as a Click. Also, when giving it a good amount of gas (getting the RPM to go up) and then suddenly taking your foot off quickly, the car like jerks, well basicly its not a smooth down shift, as that normal?

Is her tranny going bad?

Oh and what gen is her camry?

It could be bad CV drive axles, one way to do a quick check, crawl under and grab the shaft and try to shake it back and forth, feel for a lot of play and noise. Or jack up the front and spin the wheels, while listening. If you find a lot of wear, or a torn cv boot with all the grease vanished from inside the bearing, that might be your answer. But i think theres a good chance it actually is the transmission, i'd take it to a shop for a diagnosis and then myabe to another shop if you have reason not to trust this one - *cough* AAMCO *cough*

Maybe you have a broken motor / transmission mount bushing that lets the motor to move a little on acceleration and then move back the other way on deceleration? Try having someone sit in the car and hold the brake with the car running and shift from drive to reverse while you watch the engine to see if it is moving with the clunk sounds?

Well I know the CV boots themselves are fine, and they DO NOT click when turning at all. But it defintly could be what SwampFox said about a broken bushing or some shaft play, il try this stuff out, see what i can come up with, thanx for the suggestions.

Sorry for the hijack...but I have a similar problem.

When sitting in the car with the foot on the brake and shifting from P to R or N to D, I can visibly see the engine move/twist quite a bit. Probably by as much as a couple of inches.

I'm new to auto's too...is this a sign the transmission mount needs replacing or is it normal for the engine to move when engaging a gear?

Just recently had this problem and also thought it might be a transmission issue. Turned out to be a worn dogbone (torque) mount. Easy to replace.

As most others said, Engine or Tranny mount. My dad had it happen on his old '92 Camry with 60k miles.
