3rd Generation

Thanks for the replies so far

I would like to get an mobile mechanic or something but my car is under warranty so I will have to go through them (But I do get towing to anywhere in Sydney for only AU$66) . I rang the warranty people today as well and they have suggested I take the car to a Auto Electrician, Im not so sure because couldnt a mechanic check the same things and more in relation to a engine that wont start.... like an electrician wont fix a fuel pump so I will have to tow it again if thats the case etc. I hope it is something relatively minor like a fuel pump of ignition coil though, because both of these are covered under my warranty (Albeit to only AU$300, but its something!)

All will be revealed by Wednesday hopefully.

i dont know the v6 models, but have you taken off the timing belt cover and actually seen the timing belt? this is different than the belts that are in plain sight running the alternator and power steering.

general question to anyone here - if the fuel pump is dead, it is possible to spray a starter spray directly into the throttlebody and get the car to kick over for a very brief amount of time? (i do this with lawnmowers/scooters to see if they are lacking fuel.)

It should sputter a bit on the starting fluid.

^ Aussie camry has said that it kind of kicks over and dies. Its either coil or fuel. More likley coil - if the pump is dead it wouldnt recieve any fuel therefore wouldnt kick over.

Take it to a mechanic first mate, he can replace an ig. coil if thats what it is.

Do you have a Check engine light on?

Good luck

I havent taken the cover off, but I think you can JUST see the timing belt if you look hard enough underneath the belt running the altnerator? I dunno if its it, but in anycase all belts I can visually inspect are in good condition... and in the end the engine doesnt suffer from any difference in cranking, the speed is normal so Im not so sure if its a timing belt. Also I know of using starter fluid into the throttle body to try and get it started, but I really have no idea about engines (apart from the basics)... so Im inclinced not to touch it and let a mechanic who in the end can fix it as well check it out.

As for the check engine light, it shows up with all the other gauges when I turn the key to 'on' or whatever and then goes away when I try to start the car (Which I think is normal).

I hope it is the fuel pump, first thoughts when it died on me was that it was something major internally because I was accelerating hard at the time when it died. Would a fuel pump fail like this under such conditions?
At work we use a lot of starting fluid for diagnosing engines. Its just canned ether, i dont know if they sell that there down under? Probly so i should think...You follow instructions, give it a short spritz and not too much. Then quickly try and start your engine. If it now trys to start and runs for a second, then you know it is a fuel issue.

I dont even know how to do that... like getting to the throttle body etc

My car is now at the mechanic, as soon as I find anything out I will update ya's.... the guy said the process via warranty should only be 1-2 days as well so it shouldnt take to long hopefully!

GOOD NEWS!

Got word from the repairer, although I didnt ask for details yet (which I will when I go to pick the car up).... he said it was a fuel problem, some pipe was gone and was sucking in air instead of fuel and needed to be replaced. Happy.... albeit AU$400 later (when considering the towing and repair costs)

EDIT:

Lol DISREGARD what i said above, I misinterpreted him... the actual problem was the rubber intake tube had cracked/broken, it wasnt that big but I think some sensor has then screwed me over and stopped air going to the engine? (I had visually inspected everything as well and didnt see it.... must have been on the underside or something). So AU$400 later for something that would have been very cheap to have fixed myself
