dealer. the reason is because they need to catch teh R12 released by the system. its harmful to the ozone and releasing it comes with a hefty fine. if you dont care, just depress the valve and let er' rip. otherwise, take it to a shop that is licenced in the removal and handling of R12
you can release what you have as much as possible, but the only way to "flush" the system is by using a machine
as well, everytime you touch the freon and the a/c system, the oil in it should be replaced, or at least more oil should be added to keep your compressor in good running condition

You can still find R12 on eBay, or use the R12 substitute, rather then converting. R12 is for more efficient for cooling believe it or not, and far less prone to leaks.
I still have the original R12 in my '88 Camry, and it cools the car better then my buddy's '05
Not bad when considering DIY refrigerants are banned in Canada. Not simple like dropping into PEP Boys for a can or 2 or 134a.
The site says 12 cans for $110. which is the going rate for a DIY refill can at PEP Boys on sale.. One needs to call the company and get a price ala cart on leak seal, refrigerant and gauge/fittings.
The important thing is that it ships from Ontario so no need to smuggle the stuff across the border. Its a simple process to fill a working system.
I didn't see any R12 replacements at Pep Boys.

I guess 1 or 2 should be enough. I seen cans of R134 for $6 in any walmart in US, and like $13 for retrofit kit and same for pump. Infact my brother was telling me, back in times, R12 used to be available for 99 cents a can.
Search the web for substitutes for R-12, there you will find substances like propane and butane - not that I am suggesting it - but it does work....
Also Freon when burned in a fire creates some very toxic gas.... and the odds of actaully igniting the propane is pretty low if you think about - then again we all have bad days - just tell the next owner or bleed it off before you sell it....

Do a better job at reading. The company isn't saying you need to buy by the case. They mention a refill kit. Flushing R12 in order to add 134 is fraught with problems. But in your case go ahead and see what happens.
