Slowcrow,

Sometimes the individual cells on the inside of the battery will break down to the point where the cell wall divisions no longer hold the compartments separate. When that happens, rather than being a battery, its like a giant short circuit between the two terminals.

Instead of jumping the dead battery, completely remove the terminals and connect them to the good battery and try that.

Good Morning; Well I got up early and gave it a try. I disconnected the leads from the Camry battery, not the post connections but the leads from the post(s) clamps. I then connected the jumper cables directly from the good battery to the Camry battery leads, effectively removing the Camry battery from the series.
The almost dead battery in the Camry, which hardly lit the dome light, now has been replaced in line. The dome light and other accessories are now receiving good power and are fully operational.
The engine still won't turn over/rotate and makes that cacakkkk sound like the starter won't engage.
I also noticed that the CD player is making a noise when I turn the key on and off. Never noticed that before this started. heard it yesterday while trying to start but didn't know from where it was coming.
Any other ideas..........................?
Thanks, Frank

Bang on the starter solenoid with a wooden hammer handle. No need to beat on it (unless you are mad at it Grrr! Lol). The idea is to loosen up the solenoid to see if this makes a difference. So tap tap tap on the solenoid, i think your starters probly right up top on the right like mine - and tap on the little can piggy backed on the starter for a few seconds. Now try to start it, if it starts like a champ, your starter needs work, or replacement.
If you have more money than time, just change out the starter; if the reverse is true, theres a neat link on here about changing the starter contacts. And save about 95% on this repair.

Repair your own STARTER

Marc780; Yeah, I am leaning your way as I still can't help blaming the starting system, somehow. I know the battery is 7 years old but, so what. If it was the cause I'd expect to be able to start the car with a jump?
I'm thinking a direct short in the starting system like a stuck solenoid. That's the only thing I can think of that would drain a battery that fast (3hours) and not allow a jump to take place. I whacked the solenoid a couple of times already with the BFH. I'm thinking of pulling the starter assembly and getting it checked at the local auto parts store. Removal looks pretty much straight forward with everything in the way, of course.
Any other thoughts or corrective thinking. Thanks for the link..............................Frank

Fixed..........

You know, sometimes I'm my own worst enemy! The words stubborn, hardhead & dufus come to mind.
Apparently, for some yet unknown reason, my inability to properly jump the vehicle was at the heart of my convoluted reasoning.
After refusing to listen to all those who suggested the battery as being the culprit, I pulled the starter only to fine it in fine working order.
At that point I purchased a new battery, reassembled the parts, installed the new battery and wal-la, she fired right off.
My sincere apologies and thanks to all those who offered their helpful and at times, tactfully suggested help.
"To soon old, to late smart" Thanks, Frank
