4th Generation Some problem with accelerator pedal

My 98 CE got some problem with accelerator pedal.

When I stop at red light, when light turns green, I push the pedal, it feels like something is blocking the pedal underneath, it's very hard to push it down. I need to use extra power to push it, then it will release suddenly and go down. After it moves, everything is fine. But when I stop and go again, the problem appears again.

Can anybody tell what this problem is and how to solve it?

This is a common problem. You need to clean the throttle body, especially the butterfly valve.

Is there a good writeup on cleaning the throttle body on here? Mine is doing the same thing ...I have to give it alittle tap sometimes when taking off from a start so it doesnt look like I am trying to race the person beside me at every stop light when it finally unsticks and I speed off like a bat out of hell....LOL . I just figured it was a bad cable or something.

There are plenty of people who have posted instructions. If you search for posts by me, I posted some pictures awhile back.

It can't be hard...I told a shop that was doing oil changes for me at the time that my pedal was sticking and could he check and clean the throttle body for me and he did it at no charge because he said it only took him like 5 - 10 minutes and some spray cleaner. Hasn't stuck since.

The simple way of cleaning it is to remove the air intake hose and get a bottle of carb/throttle body cleaners. Make sure it is sensor-safe. spray at the throttle body and wipe off. Open the butterlfy valve and spray inside, trying to wipe some off as you go along. Just keep spraying and cleaning. For the final step just spray it all the way into the throttle body and then hoook things back up to normal. Starting the car will be hard but once it starts, there should be black smoke coming out of the exaust. That goes to show that you are burning off junk inside your throttle body. Smoke in this case is good. Should help your sticky pedal problem.
