4th Generation how i resolved P0446 issue

00 camry le v6 101,000 miles

I had been getting the P0446 engine code for some time. I get the code and then i would erase it. The code meand that I need to replace the Vsv for the charcoal canister. The dealer wanted $200 for the labor. The part only costs about $50. I recently erased the code, I have a small code scanner, so its easy for me to do. The week after I drove almost all the time with mt tank on empty. So for about 500 miles the code has not come back. i drove my tank on emoty because I didnt have much money gas is expensive. I didnt think that would effect the check engine light coming on. So today I filled up. Ive driven about 200 miles in the past couple of days with my tank full now. I think maybe by driving with almost no fuel left. That this somehow cause gas from the charcoal canister to be used and that car would no longer give me the p0446 error. I dont know this is just theory. I guess well really have to wait and see in the next couple of weeks to see if the code comes back.

bump

found anything new to report?
i do not thikn that it will solve the 446 problem

i have 441 and 446
here is what i have researched

Quote:
A. Diagnostics for PO441:
1. Remove Vacuum Hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister and discard.
2. If there is a metal vapor pipe between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister, clean inside of vapor
pipe
3. Replace EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister assembly with new parts.
4. Install new vacuum hoses between EVAP VSV and Charcoal Canister.
B. Diagnostics for P0446:
1. Inspect vacuum hoses and pipes between EVAP (Purge) VSV and Charcoal Canister for leaks.
2. Replace Vapor Pressure VSV and Canister.
NOTE :When performing diagnostics for an occurrence of a MIL "ON" condition, Diagnostic
Trouble Code (DTC) P0441 may be result of debris in Evaporative Emission Control System. This
may cause blockage of a vapor line, or a stuck VSV, as described in troubleshooting area of Repair
Manual.

446 Error Fix

I had 446 error and spent $450. to fix by changing cannister. Here is low cost solution to problem given by Tototo mechanic.
1. Look for cracked or leaky hoses around cannister.

2. Replace vapor cannister purge valve attached to cannister (about $50.). some dealers will only sell cannister with valve but try others.

3. If error comes back replace cannister ($225).

Mechanic says replacing valve fixes problem 50% of times.

i'm guessing this is a dealer only part? I've been searching the parts websites and nothing. Haven't talked to my parts guy in town yet but I'm thinking its probably dealer only. Is this what you guys had to do is go to the dealer?

Probably a dealer-only part, but it solved my problem. Not a super hard fix either.

In addition to codes P0441& 446.. Look for a disconnectted or damaged hose around the air filter box that goes the evap solenoid, sometimes it's gets knocked off when servicing the air filter with Toyota air filter recharge kits, also solenoid could be failled, the cannister could be breaking down and causing the evap solenoids and valves to stick. can be a trickier system to diag because there are lots of components in the system

good luck and keep us posted

Hope this helped
