Anti Squeal springs will help, hence it was designed in. Return and get ones with the springs.

Dunno about the springs.

Just did a brake job on my '95 Prizm and *those* pads *did* have the holes, but there were no springs & I wasn't about to go shopping for any so I just put the pads in & used a lot of blue gunk between the shims & pads as well as greasing the sliders, etc. really well. Seems to be fine.

Now, my '98 Camry *does* have the springs and I'm gonna make sure I NEVER lose them.

I *do* tihnk that it makes a difference, but I also know that my Prizm brakes are working just fine without them.

???

fwiw, you can get replacement springs from a dealership for about 4 bucks.

Having said that, I drove without them on one side for several months and noticed no excess wear or noise. Course it was only 4 months.

If the slider pins are moving normally and you put antisqueel gunk on the pads, I'm thinking you should probablybe okay.

Those springs (I think you mean shims) are there just to reduce the noise caused by pad vibration. They will not effect braking performance. You can get them at thew dealer and put them on or you can use spray or finger applied "disc brake quiet" on the backs of the pads as someone above suggested. Or you can just drive the car for a while and see if you notice any noise. If you do, then you can do one of the above 2 things to eliminate the noise.

Did you bleed the brake system after you pushed in the caliper to fit the new, thicker pads? A longer throw on the pedal, to me, sounds like air in the system.

Mike,

IMMSMC, he really is talking about springs. I don't believe the 6 cylinder Gen 4 has these springs, but my car does (see signature).

I do have one more question,

After I changed the brake pads, now I have to press the pedal lower to brake. Otherwise everything else is fine. While I was pushing the piston in for the new pads, some oil had leaked out from the rubber around the piston.

Is this bad? what should I do?
Med,

It may be time for a slave cylinder rebuild/replacement. Has the brake fluid ever been changed in this car? Brake fluid that is really old and dirty can hold a lot of moisture. Moisture = corrosion.

I change my brake fluid every 30K miles.
