3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
First the idle is really low, car is shaking.. it's like 500rpm
And when I give it some gas when the car comes back to idle the engine dies
I haven't moved the car for the last 2 months and I installed a new battery in it today (replaced my toyota battery for an optima)
Anyone have an idea what it can be?
i would try bringing the idle up a little bit to just under a 1,000 rpm....try adjusting the idle and then see what happens....also make sure all ur plugs and secure in their slot...spark plugs anyways....u have to make sure they are all firing in order....but try those 2 things

1. When was the last time fuel filter was changed? If you dont know, change it.
2. Clean throttle body and IAC. Do a search and there are 100 posts on this, some by me. It's easy to do.
3. Check alt output, use a Volt ohmmeter, they can be had for ten bucks at walmart. another easy thing to do even if you have never seen one of these devices in your life. Idle engine for several minutes, put probes to battery - 14.0 to 15 volts is what you want to see. Any less the alt could be causing the problem.
(On one occasion, my engine kept dying, losing power and doing the same things you describe. Ultimately I found out it was the alternator, and yet the dashboard light never even flickered! )
4. If none of these works, check fuel pump output...the pressure could be low and maybe it needs to be replaced.
