3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I've driven several cars with the 5S-FE engine - '93 MR2 5-speed, '96 Camry 5-speed, '01 Camry auto (w/California emissions) and my present '00 camry auto. The only one that felt fast was the MR2.
The 5S-FE in the MR2 wasn't anything special, it was faster because it was the lightest (by about 300-350 lbs), had the 5-speed with the lowest gearing (I remember about 2800-2900 RPM @ 60 MPH in 5th gear).
You can do some mods on your car that will help a little, but don't expect anything significant.
I'd tackle the intake/exhaust and that's about all I would touch. You can take on the engine internals, but on a 5S-FE, I wouldn't bother what you would get out of it is minimal, especially hooked to an automatic transmission.
Let's put it this way, you can spend thousands on a 4-cyl Camry to make it go fast, and but it would still be slower that a Camry V6.

yea man you better off just selling yours and getting a v6 version of the car if you want to go NA. Only thing to do with the 5sfe is turbocharge and do it right like build the internals and stuff or just go away from the 5sfe and swap a 3sgte motor which is the mr2 turbo engine.
An NA 5SFE in a gen 4 would still be slow as hell... That car is too heavy for that motor. Even a Beams 3SGE would still be slow. That car needs either a V6 or boost.
I figured the same thing. Those cars are way too heavy for a little 4-banger. I know they are designing them in mind of fuel economy, but shit... most people probably are rodding out their tiny engines trying to push them to hard. I feel like thats what is happening to my little rolla. Can't meet my filthy heavy footed ways . Kinda almost seems like I have it floored 90% of the time, and floored and half in is about the same effect anyways haha
I can get about 20Nm and 10ps (metric horsepower) improvement in the low and mid range for my '00 camry 2.2L. Driveability around the city is much better esp below 3000rpm, even better than stock 2.4L camry.
Red Line = Stock
Blue Line = Powerchip + Toluene
Cyan Line = Powerchip + Toulene + NGK Power Cable wireset + Denso VK20Y
I am going to try TRP Gen4 CAI next. I think my top end is being choked by stock filter being too restrictive.
I have one of these also, and can vouch for it's effectivness. Definetly good improvments in the Low and Mid RPM range, especially with torque. I have it on a V6 however.
