3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have a 1999 Toyota Camry LE V6 5spd. About every 3000 miles I have to put a quart of oil in. I know it's not leaking oil, and I don't see smoke coming from the exhaust. I'm sure it is using it somewhere. I am currently using Mobil1 5w30. I was considering going to 10w30 to help with the consumption problem. Maybe adding Lucas oil stabilizer as well. I plan on supercharging the car at 5.5 PSI. Proper fuel system upgrades will be installed. If I installed the supercharger, would the oil consumption get worse? I think it is likely. Maybe I should just rebuild the motor and do a full engine and supercharger install. I'm looking for opinions here. Thanks.
Rebuild the engine before supercharging. The engine won't use more oil, but it definitely won't use less.
That would be a good time to buy the Engine Overhaul Gasket kit from Toyota as well. Have your block and head resurfaced, and do a 3 angle valve job. You'll probably need to have your cylinders honed, and new piston rings put in.
I'm thinking of the TRD S/C as an upgrade for my V6 MR2 sometime soon, like maybe after I fully break in my engine.
I don't really want to invest the money in having the engine rebuilt right now. I was hoping to get about 8-10 months out of it with the supercharger on it. then I could build an engine right with forged internals and at a lower compression ( say 9.0-1 ). The engine only has 93000 miles on the engine. Is this plausable?
it is possible that your engine is very slowly using the engine oil. one quart per 3K is acceptable. you can supercharge the engine in its current state and it probably would last for a bit. a rebuild with stronger internals is the way to do it properly. make sure you get the correct fuel mods. dont want to run too lean and smoke the engine prematurly.

I agree completely. The current engine should last a while. However, your oil consumption will go up a bit, if only for the fact that you will be putting your foot in it a bit more after supercharging it. Increased RPM's mean increased oil consumption, IMHO. I would just check the oil a bit more frequently, say every 500 miles or so.
Incidently, you would have to be burning a considerable amount of oil to see blue smoke coming out the tail pipe in everyday driving; a lot more than 1 quart every 1000 miles.
I myself am supercharged and it seems like I average 1 qt loss every 10k. Is it necessary to replace the missing quart or can the V6 run off 4 qts without causing damage??

Hopefully you don't go 10K or more before you change your oil. I go 5-6K and use Mobil1 extended performance. I believe that with the DOHC engine, running at 4 quarts instead of 5 would possibly starve the cams from proper oiling. I try to keep my oil topped off, check it every other time I fill up ( about 750 miles ).
Yes, top it off. Oil has 3 functions in an engine; it lubricates, it cools and it seals. 4 quarts can't so the job as well as 5. With 4 you are down 20% of your oil. I like to top off cars when they go down about 1/2 quart. IMHO.

the 1mz-fe motor is known for oil consumption. best thing to do is pull bank 2 valve cover and see if sludge is present. if not you could probably just replaced the valve stem seals and the problem should be fixed. usually is very rare that a re-ring is needed

I thought it was known for engine sludge?
A quart for 3k miles isn't bad. I would try 10w30 though.
Ok, so am I the only one not loosing oil? My old Camry (5SFE I4) had leaks from every seal and lost 1q every 3k miles.
I have 120k miles, with a TRD SC, and use M1 5W30, and loose NO oil, and I run the piss out of my car. I did about 10 60-90mph runs over the last 2 days testing things. If your loosing that much oil, do not put on the SC, cause your likely going to blow something before long, espetially at 5.5PSI.
