Stuff Below Carpet

Hello Everyone,

I have been having a consistent moldy smell from my vents and I started pulling stuff below the passenger side to see if I could reach the cooling fins and clean them.
When I pulled up the carpet.(the undermat) the front portion near the firewall was dry ,but the portion near the edge of the seat was totallly soaked and moldy.The carpet being waterproof didnt even show this.

First of all what is the stuff below the carpet called? is it a sound deadener?

Being the idiot that I am I put it in the washing machine ,and later found it to be unusable beyond belief.

Where can I get some more of this stuff ? What is its pupose?

bump...Anybody?it looks like recycled fiberfill,sort of grayish color...just below the carpet

it should be sound deadening material

where to get new material- there's always the dealership....or you can try using other sound deadening materials such as dynamat or raammat
