98? How many KM on the odometer? Have you kept up with basic maintainece like routine oil changes? Just from a crazy one-off guess from the very little info.... If the engine was reving higher but it was slowing down... Transmission trouble? But, I can't explain the smoke unless that oil leak is cauing it by burning on a hot engine component.

Write back with what Toyota says the problem is.

It has 210,000kms... we are very pedantic about its servicing and its always done on time.

I also thought it might have been the trans... however im confused by the smoke.. Ill post up what the Toyota guy says tomorow, Thanks!

Based upon the description, I'd guess a line to the trans cooler broke and put some fluid on the exhaust which caused the smoke.
FWIW
YMMV

The pool of oil on my driveway seems to be engine oil... not trans... and weve checked the trans fluid level and it seems fine

Ok.. the dude came by today and said for starters the rocker cover is leaking... explaining the massive oil leak in our driveway. (the smoke probally being from the oil dripping onto something hot) However the trans is a different story... he thinks the last people who serviced the car might have put the wrong oil in as its the wrong colour and smells like gear oil not trans. The other explanation is maybe a faulty solenoid, but he's coming back 2morro to check that out. Hopefully our trans isnt damaged
