3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
1. Plugs - NGK BKR6EIX Did not regap
2. Wires
3. PCV Valve
4. Fuel Filter - had to remove the air box etc...
5. Both PS and Alternator belts.
Drove it around for a while, check engine came on - code P0446.
WTF!! What did I do now ? After the tune up I get that code.
I see that people are saying the VSV by the canister...but I dont know if thats the issue, I see it is by the fuel tank.
Is it hard to install ?
I know I had to disconnect the wires that are by the air box, and the manuals say they are going to the EVAP. I put them all back in. Did not see any leaks, etc....and car runs like a champ.
Any ideas on what to check or what I could have jacked up ?
Thanks - never thought a tune up was hard till this one..
so I read the manual a bit more......the EVAP VSV is by the AIR Box correct ?
Is it the one that is next to the air box or is it the one ON the airbox ?
Also can I check the VSV for EVAP without an pressure gauge ? meaning just connect the leads from the battry to the VSV connector and start the car, see if the light comes on ?
the vsv is small it has one hose that goes in and one that goes out the hoses are not clamped on so there is easy removal the vsv itself it connected to a bracket with a small phillips head screw. the position of the screw is akward. So I cut off the head. And put a new screw in there. Problem solved.
Wish I had pics maybe next time I will run into something similiar.
I talked to the dealer over the phone about the P0446 I talked to a mechanic He told me exactly what this code means. The VSV costs $50 and you can get it directly from the toyota dealership. The dealer in my area wants $150 labor for the install which is ridiculous.
Yeah I saw that post, but I am still not clear on what part is the VSV. I have one round thing on the airbox, kinda slanted.
Then there is another thing not on the airbox, but has a hose(s) going in to it, has one electrical connector on it, and one of the hoses goes to a green valve kinda thing.
Its right above the fuel filter.
Which one is the problem, and how could I have jacked it up by doing a tune up ? Was I not allowed to remove the connector etc ?
I guess there are 2 vsv componenets on this auto one by the air and one by the gas tank The particular code that narrows down this problem for us is that of the P0446. Which means that it is the VSV by the gas tank. This is an emmissions related issue. I did not notice any drivability problems when I had this code. So it is a minor problem. If you really want to learn about all the diff check engine light codes there is a good article over at www.autotap.com the article is free and it is very good. I think by doing all the stuff that you did to your car that some how this cleared out some of the carbon in your engine and that messed up the vsv.
states : "P0446 Evaporative Emission Control System Vent Control Circuit Malfunction"
Now, looking at the manual : the one by the fuel tank is called : VSV for VaporPressure Sensor
The one in the engine compartment by the air filter is called : VSV for EVAP
So is it still really the one by the gas tank ? I only get the one code. But the description of the code and the part, seem to point to the one in the engine.

Just want to clarify before changing.....
Let me clarify P0446 is for the VSV for the charcoal canister, it is a specific code, if it was the other vsv the one by the air filter it would be another code. Im not quite sure what the other code is. Swap out the vsv for the charcoal canister and your gonna be done with this prbolem for awhile g/l
So the light came back on within a week, need to get the code read again, but in the meantime....whats the PART number for the VSV by the gas tank ? is it 90910-12264 ? Where is the cheapest place to order or buy from ?
