92 Camry hood strut removal

I am trying to replace the hood struts on my 92 Camry but I can't get them off. I have read elsewhere that you "pop off" the strut from the ball joint, but nothing I do gets them free. I have tried pulling them, prying with a screwdriver (mostly ends up denting the underside of the hood) and twisting them off the ball which appears to be bending the ball shaft. The ball portion has a base on which I can fit a 12 mm wrench, but it does not move. Help!

There is a little slot on the part where the strut connects to the chassis, and also where the strut connects to the hood.

If you stick a flat head into this slot (you need to use a little force), this tab will move backwards, and the strut can be pulled out.

Do the same for the side that connects to the hood.
