4th Generation Blew my rear main seal

So driving along Monday, look in my mirror and there is a bunch of smoke. So I pull over and stop, get out and look and there's a puddle of oil on the ground and its leaking on my exhaust. So AAA helps me out, my mechanic tells me yesterday its a blown rear main seal. He quoted me $1200-$1400 and he can't even get to it until the 1st of the year. So I bring(tow) it to another shop today that my friend goes to (He's a tech for Chevy) and they tell me a few days and around $850. Kinda sucks but there is only 55,000mi on the car... 1999 Camry I4(5sfe) Anyone ever have this done before? Comments on prices, etc? I just want my car back

Price is definatly gonna be high since the tranny has to come out. So your pretty much looking at tranny R&R for the labor.

ouch...on that kind of mileage, that's painful...

and the 850 is actually pretty good.....just dropping the tranny out costs around 800-1000

A few months back I had my rear main seal, distributor o-ring & oil pan gasket replaced. It ran me $1066, with the $66 being the parts. It was 1k in labor and tax

Just kidding folks... So I called the shop today and he says that it wasn't the rear main seal that I have a hole in my tranny. He said I was seeing "final drive fluid" and not oil. He said something about a clip or something breaking inside and then rubbing against the housing until it made a hole. So a new tranny is about 800 with ~600 in labor so we're talking $1400 for the whole deal. WTF At least I'm starting a new job once the new year rolls around so I'll be able to pay for it... Should have the car back in ~5 days. It is what it is....
