3rd Generation Trunk locked. Cable broken I guess.

Hi,

I dont have the car keys that open the trunk, and the trunk is not opening from the driver seat button. I guess wire is broken. Any suggestion how can I open it?

I had same problem - I took the puller at the side of the seat out & then could pull the inner cable further . Alternate if you can reach the inner cable around the puller pull it alone. This worked the first few times. I have left the puller off & pull the wires instead . I also put a tire valve cap with a split under the cable end in the trunk so the cable is tighter. This has been good for the last two years Good luck!

You sure you didn't just set the trunk to "valet" mode? ---- if that is the case..wire isn't broke. Valet mode disables the trunk latch from the driver's seat. as well as does not allow the "valet" key to be used to open the trunk.

Go try all your keys first before doing any of that.

Thanx a lot guys. Actually, I packed up the trunck with suitcases.. I somehow juggled everything out from back seat, and the trunk started to open on its own.

Well..... to set the valet...you have to turn the key to the horizontal position and take it out. But in your case you said your key didn't work for the trunk anyway and that it only worked for your door.

So....I can't figure out how you would have set the valet. thus I can only surmise that maybe you are right about a broken cable or ther...maybe someone else has a clue?

If the trunk opened after you took all the cargo out, the suitcases might have been pushing on something it shouldn't have such as the torsion springs or pinching the bowden cable. Your key should open more than just the driver door. It should open the passenger side door also at the minimum. Do you have a Toyota brand key with the rubber/plastic top portion?

"Valet mode" prevents operation of the trunk lever by the driver. Insert the key and turn CCW until the key is horiontal. This will lock the trunk lid.

I have 2 keys to my car. Both have grips that are covered in plastic and have the resistor to start the ignition. What does a valet key look like? I have a copy made from Meijer that will open the doors and turn the starter but will not complete ignition.

A valet key should open the doors and start the car. However, it should not allow access to the glove box or the trunk.

The tip of the normal key looks like an arrow head and the valet key is flat at the front.

If you have the original keys, the rubber part on the master keys should be black and the valet key should be grey.

I didn't have a key to open the trunk on the 96! I went to the dealership, and gave them my Vin# and they made a key that does!
