3rd & 4th Generation (1992–1996 & 1997–2001)Toyota Camry Discussion for years: 1992-1996 & 1997-2001
Topics of discussion range from fuel economy, safety, modifications, performance all involving America's favorite family car, the Toyota Camry.
I have been logging hundreds of miles each week the past month. My baby has been keeping up with my crazy driving.
However, I noticed my car has trouble starting after a warm start. In the morning, it fires just fine but after I pump gas or run some errands, it occasionally has this issue.
This is the same car that failed smog. Since then, I did another oil change, oil filter, replaced with NGK plugs, and replaced the fuel filter. The check engine light came on again, and I'm guessing it's the P0446 (EVAP failure).
your IAC maybe clogged. Clean the TB.
Before you crank your car, pump the gas. Also turn the key two clicks (you see the check engine lights/oil lights etc on the dash) and wait a few seconds before actually cranking. I have to do this on my car on warm starts, otherwise it will crank awkwardly and roughly, and possibly stall if i dont keep cranking it long enough (sounds like its choking).
bandaid fixes arent a good solution. get that coed checked out and then do a proper fix.
i fail to see why a stuck TB would cause bad warmstarts (its not even being used), the TB being seperate to the IACV that is, but if it works on cold start and not warm, you may have an A/F ratio problem. check your AFM make sure it moves fairly freely.
and get that code checked

After you fix your EVAP problem, and do basic maintenanace, cleaning egr/tb & iac.
Check the fuel pressure at the fuel rail 5 minutes after you shut a warm engine off. It should remain 25psi. If not, pump & filter.

If the code doesn't give you a direction, I would check out the ECT sensor (engine coolant temperature sensor) with a DVM and the specs from any manual. It may be out of range and telling the ECU (computer) the engine is still cold when it is warm. This would result in the computer providing a mixture that is too rich for a warm engine start. Hope for this. It's cheap to replace.
